As a proponent of WIND POWER, I want to help spread the word that's it's a wonderful way to go.

I got this email from Southwest Windpower the other day, so I will cut and paste the links, as it's very useful info.  You can sign up for their newsletter to be really educated.

If you are considering installing a small wind system on your property, be sure to consider whether you have enough wind, and best location to place a small wind system.

Bergey wind turbine in Haiku MauiHAIKU MAUI HI

Here on the north shore of Maui we have plenty of steady wind, thanks to the Tradewinds.  We have been using wind to power our homes for many years.  This is a picture of our Bergey wind turbine on a 60 foot pole, which has been running and making power for us for years.  My husband can take it down by himself, but it's easier with a little help.  We haven't yet tried a Skystream, but I like the concept of their design, and hope to see one in action here in the neighborhood soon.

Let's see if we can get more communities to accept wind power as a viable alternative.

If you're thinking of an off-grid lifestyle on Maui, let me be your guide.

Georgina - Great advise! Additionally one should have a professional do a site evaluation for placement, height and best location on a parcel. I recently spoke with one contractor who had a site evaluation and found to be effective the tower would need to be 70 foot tall. Unfortunately, due to the parcel size and setbacks that would not work. When they construct the house they will put in place the wiring in anticipation of some new models coming out that will be able to be placed on the rooftop. I recommend both of these companies. They each have their attributes! Great article!

Not sure it would work here, but we had wind farms in parts of Calif. Wind and Solar are so close I can see it!

One who knows
Wind power is easy to set up. Just buy a marine windmill. No big deal as you can easily add more. No professional rip off artists needed. Also, the windmill farm on maui doesn't save the average citizen any money - and it destroys the view.

Hey thanks for the comments... way back in 2007.

One Who Knows... Thank you as well.  Even though the Kaheawa Wind Farm doesn't translate into savings for Maui Electric customers, all of us on Maui are benefitting from the cleaner air we can breathe when all those barrels of diesel don't have to be burned, especially those who live in South Maui.  I kind of like how those wind towers look on the mountain, it's an enhancement to the view, and it signifies that we are being less dependent on non-renewable resources.  I would be happy to see a lot more of them, all over this country, if it can help prevent another big disaster like in the Gulf right now.
