1408 - The Movie, The Ending, Help!

So, I just finished watching 1408, which didn't get much publicity, but was supposedly a great thriller, thought provoking type movie.

Its basically about a cynical writer (John Cusack) who goes into "haunted" mansions, houses, etc and writes about their history etc, yet doesn't believe them himself. He finally makes it to the Dolphin hotel and asks to stay in room 1408. The history is, there has never been a guest who has checked out alive. Over 56 deaths, a combinations of suicides and natural causes. The manager (Samuel L. Jackson) informs him no one has lasted longer then 1 hour. He doesn't believe the hype and stays in the room. Now, I need your help!

Now, for those of you who have seen it, can you explain the ending to me. Is he still in the room? Is his wife now stuck too? Did he make it out. I know there was the brick wall that said "burn me" and such, so he did....but....Please! Help Me!

My daughter and I saw this about a month ago and yeah the ending is a little weird. Wasn't real sure what to make of it either so I will be waiting to see what others have to say.

The recorder captured the conversation in the room. They were living their lives again with the ghostly reminder..

Ok, I can see that but what about the recorder. Could this recorder still play in the condition it was in? I know the reasonable answer to this is its the movies anything is possible but seriously, did it not stop and make you go, HUH?

See, that is exactly what it did to me. I've been reading several blogs about the movie, and its split about down the middle as to whether they're still in the room, (which leads to the questions, did the wife ever make it to the room), or if he's out of the room. Grr... I'm calling the director and Stephen King...

I'm with you. The ending is a total mystery to me. I've been looking online for an explanation myself. This movie must have been subject to bad directing and even worse screen writing.

The fact that we don't 100% understand the ending doesn't mean the movie was badly directed or produced..

There are so many different ways to interprete the ending..As some of you said, he might still be stuck in the room, however, we do see the manager of the hotel say : "Well done" in the end, meaning the author succeeded into getting out.

My husband came to the conclusion that the alcoholic drink contained drug which caused these hallucinations. He got out, when he got ride of the drink and burned the room. However, the drug doesn't explain his daughter's voice on the tape...I never read the book, but I believe there was no clear ending... very good movie!

There is a clear ending in the book. He does get out. But the ending is quite different. Still the movie is very good.
