On May 30th, the Earlysville Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Champ Lawson JR. Post 2044, will host a patriotic Memorial Day Program at the Earlysville, VA Post Office on Bent Oak drive at 10:00am.

This is quite a wonderful annual event; following is a post from the WVIR Channel 29 report in 2009...

Hundreds gathered at the Earlysville Post Office on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day and remember those who have given their lives for others. Veterans of Foreign Wars Champ Lawson Jr. Post 2044 hosted the event.

"I lost a lot of friends in the armed forces. I was in World War II and Korea and Vietnam and lost friends in each one," said Thomas Bass.

For Bass and others, it was a day of mixed emotions. Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello (D) gave the keynote address at the event. A majority of time was spent honoring lives lost.

"I think about the people who went and didn't come back," said Tim Rogers, a member of Post 2044.

But there was also time to celebrate the freedom we have thanks to those who dedicate their lives to the fight. "It gives us an opportunity to sort of give back to the community," Rogers said.

Messages of hope and encouragement were also sent to the men and women who are currently serving on the front lines. "Hang in there and have a good heart, because I'm thoroughly convinced it's going to turn out well eventually," Bass said.

Post 2044 is named in honor of Champ J. Lawson, Jr., a charter member who was killed in Vietnam.
