Tuesday Treasures - 1607 Settlement in Jamestown, Virginia

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

This has been a great day; I went with my son's class on a field trip to Jamestown, Virginia. As you may remember, Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement, established in 1607. Jamestown was also the capital of Virginia until 1698.

Almost immediately after landing, the colonists were under attack from the Algonquian Indian. Under the leadership of John Smith, they quickly built a fort, including a storehouse, church, and a number of houses. The friendly tribe of Powhatan Indian helped the colonists survive the harsh conditions by trading with them. The Powhatan chief was also the father of famous Pocahontas.

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but Pocahontas and John Smith did not have a steamy affair. When John Smith arrived to the New World, he was 27 years old, while Pocahontas was only 12. That difference in age makes the romance unlikely. Another thing I learned today, Powhatan men and women shaved their heads. So the image of John Smith madly in love with incredibly attractive, long-haired Pocahontas was dreamed up by Hollywood. Just a brief history lesson for Tuesday. Have a fabulous and productive day.

Here are some photos of Jamestown Settlement from my trip with 4th graders.

Elizabeth,

I think it's wonderful you could join your son and his class to visit Jamestown.  It's sure a good way to learn history, too.

I think I'd rather believe the Hollywood fantasy version of history.  Telling me John Smith and Pocahontas were both skin heads is a little like telling me there's no Easter Bunny.  I prefer my fantasy, but it's o.k.  And couldn't they have waited about 6-7 before they started their romance?  Maybe they just let it simmer until she was 18+.

I like the roofing on the Indian hut.

Pocahontas had no HAIR?  Wow.

The ship is so cool; imagine taking that on the ocean though?  It must have constantly been full of water.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Elizabeth,  Good history lesson,  Here I always figure there was a affair going on but 12 and 27 would not work.  Have a good one.

Fun pictures.....my husband traveled with my daughters' 5th grade class on a trip to Washington DC and they got to visit Jamestown on the way.  I need to find all the photos they took on that trip, wow, that was 10 years ago!

This is very cool and leave it up to Hollywood to make the story sexy!!

I loved going on field trips when the kids were young and I definitely feel like I am missing out!  I bet you have some GREAT historic field trips in the Arlington VA area!

History is always different than what is presented on the big screen.  Looks like a very interesting field trip.

Roy, what a great photo. Our tour guide never brought us to this fabulous statue. I need to re-visit Jamestown and take more photos.

Lloyd - yes, she has hair. Perhaps she adopted the customs of English women when she was held captive at Jamestown, after John Smith left.

I loved field trips when I was in school. Your trip made me go back to Jamestown when I maybe about your sons age. You have some very nice shots. Congratulations on your feature.
