Vacationing in the Southern US is amazing and wonderful. I'm a Carolina Girl, and I look forward to our trips "home" and the gastronomic delights that await.
I just read Valerie Zinger's hilarious post:
Save your heart. Don't eat the poutine in Ottawa.
I love reading Valerie's blog posts and this one was especially funny as she chronicles the heath impacts of eating those yummy, gravy-covered french fries that are famous throughout Eastern Canada.
I laughed as I did a quick mental review of our trip to the grocery store yesterday. My husband Erich and I drove to our vacation home in Ocean Isle Beach, NC yesterday. We are here 3-4 times a year and look forward to the wonderful local food as much as the ocean breezes and "down time" of a beach vacation. We stopped by the Food Lion grocery store to stock up for a week of yummy Southern eats.
Normally, we are somewhat "particular" about what we eat. We avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup, we never buy cereal with more than 6 grams of sugar, only organic meats.....yada, yada. BUT....that seems to go right out the window when we cross the State line into the Carolinas.
Oh trips to Hardee's for biscuits and gravy!
We piled our grocery buggy high with: Boiled peanuts (yes, boiled), Duke's Real Mayonnaise, Pimento Cheese Spread....once we were on a roll, we couldn't stop.
Throw in those Pretzel M&Ms (hey, it was the new candy product of the year!), sour cream & onion chips, 2- 1/2 gallons of ice-cream (they were buy 1, get 1 free), southern buttermilk biscuits, local sausage, just-caught shrimp, 4 bottles of wine, 2 lbs of okra, tomatoes, collard greens, fresh corn..sugar for the sweet iced tea! We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the south and southern food. I'm sure we'll have fried chicken, frogmore stew and pork rinds before the week is out.
Tomorrow we're off to have Seafood at the Boundary House in Calabash, NC. Hush puppies, fried oysters...yum! Never had a hush puppy? You haven't really experienced the south....and y'all better get some sweet ice tea to with those pups.
Caroline is your Real Estate Guide in New Hampshire, but in the Carolinas, let Caroline & Erich be your dining guides. Y'all come on down!
Cheers!
Caroline
