So, Do You Enjoy Being a REALTOR?

By
Real Estate Agent with Long and Foster REALTORS (703) 470-4545 0225085927

couple moving into new houseSo, I'm at a function tonight - totally non-real estate related - and the person to the right of me says, "So, you're in real estate.  Do you enjoy what you do?"

Clearly, she has not been reading my endless stream-of-consciousness blog posts this month about the stress, the drama, the sleepless nights...

After a momentary pause, I realized, though, the answer is - despite my kvetching for the past few weeks - still a resounding YES!

I do enjoy what I do.  Despite the drama, the stress and the sleepless nights.

I have clients I absolutely adore.  Like the young couple who recently bought their first home, and at walk through - looking around at their wonderful new home which was just perfect for them -  hugged me and said, "We love you."

It is those moments that make every single second of it not seem like work.

No, we won't have a 9-5 day, we don't have regular weekends off, we work through evenings, meals and vacations.  Everything we do is tied to a schedule not always our own or to contract deadlines, all of which adds a little stress to the day.

We are responsible for finding our own clients, balancing our own books, determining our marketing plans, putting up open house signs in the wind and the rain, showing property in the snow and the ice and the heat and the humidity - along with a long list of other challenges.

But at the end of the day, when a divorced woman who struggled to regain her footing and despaired of ever being in a position to buy her own home again tears up as she hugs you and thanks you for sticking with her for all those many months, you do realize there is a lot right with what we do.

Not all stories are that dramatic, of course, but at the end of the day, we are helping people with what is often a very large investment and a huge decision for them...and we should feel pretty good about that, indeed.

Susan, is that a new banner? I love it. Sorry off topic. I love being a REALTOR for those same moments.

That's lovely and so wonderful that you find the enjoyment. It IS tough out there - but there's big payoff too which is knowing you have very happy clients!

This certainly is a worthwhile and satisfying job, Susan.  After all we are helping people with one of the most difficult and personal transactions of their lives.  They put their trust in us and we have to feel good about it when it all comes to a successfuly conclusion.

Thanks for the reminder.  When I have one of those days, after all is said and done, I remember that I really do love being a Realtor.

I love this job too.  Even though there is the possibility for stress it's not life and death and the happiness factor is really great.  The best decision I ever made was to make the career shift from counseling to real estate.

Jane:  It's important to keep in mind just how big of a deal it is to them.

Karen:  That's what we have to do sometimes.

Stacey-Ann:  Those counseling skills come in very handy, though.

Kim:  Thanks!

Sussie:  I'm so glad to hear others feel the same.

Susan, with any job it seems there is stress, problems etc... but we do get through it.  I like being a Realtor and as you stated  the hugs, tear and smiles make it worthwhile.

Susan - I LOVE being a REALTOR!!!  There are definitely some very challenging days, but when a client thanks you and/or is extremely happy when you help them buy or sell it is soooo rewarding and worth every second of it.

Susan, I was reminded of how I evidently feel now about being a realtor the other day. With one of my agents the subject got to how tough it can sometimes be, but i don't remember all the particulars of our discussion.

Then I remembered that when I was a healthcare architect working in a very stressful corporate environment, I dreaded Sunday nights. Why? Because after a good weekend, I had to go back to work on Monday morning. I have no problem with Sundays and Sunday nights now. That tells me a LOT.

Very well put.  I love what I do.  And despite those ocassional moments that have me threatening to mail the license back to Richmond, I am overjoyed with my career choice.
