Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery and a Little Presidential Scandal!

Chapel

Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery in Murphy North Carolina is a tranquil piece of history right in the middle of town.

Built in 1850, it sits majestically on a hill overlooking the town of Murphy.

Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery is now under the control of the North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  In 1984, it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places.

Of course, every piece of history has to have a little “mystery” attached to it as well andEnloe Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery is no exception!  It is rumored that Abram Enloe, who is buried in the cemetery, was actually the biological father of Abraham Lincoln.

You see, his mother Nancy Hanks was a servant in the Enloe household over in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  Having been taken in by the family as a servant, it caused quite a stir in the Enloe household when Ms. Hanks became “with child”.  Mr. Enloe did not live in Murphy but was visiting family here when he took ill and passed.

All scandal aside, Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery is a great place to visit.  The cemetery is small and you can roam freely around and take in all the headstones.   Many date back to the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.  Some are as recent as the 1960’s

Make sure and take time to

visit this very historic place whenever you’re in town!

Cyndi, I love old cemeteries.  And nothing beats history mystery.  You keep posting these tantalizing views of Murphy, the Chamber of Commerce should appreciate your efforts in promoting the area.

Kwee - Yes, it is now.  At one time it had become pretty run-down but the DAR is now taking good care of it.

Mona, you'll have to check this one out.  It's small but so cool!   Yep, I'm the local "ambasssador of good pictures"!

Andrea, I hadn't heard it either.  I took a picture of the Abram Enloe headstone because it was the oldest one I saw.  Then when I started to research the chapel and cemetery for my blog post, I discovered the history and, fortunately, didn't have to go back to the cemetery for the correct headstone - I HAD IT!!  How lucky is that!

Abraham Lincoln's father?  You are making that up - just to make your post more entertaining.  LOL

I love cemetaries - we go to Salt Lake City often, they have a very cool old one, deer run loose in there, I walk around and imagine these people, how hard to live in that cold climate 100 years ago.

Don't you love it when you start to write a post, and already have the right photo on your computer?  I have thousands, spend a few minutes everyday re-categorizing them - what a mess!

Now Virginia! I would never make something up like that  :-))  Google Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery.  Thanks to learning how to use keywords more effectively, my AR post will come up in the top ten.  But read some of the others and it will tell you about Mr. Enloe's catting around!

I stopped by the Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery in the morning to snap the pix for my blog not knowing about Enloe and just happened to shoot his tombstone.  I was very surprised to find that, out of all the headstones in the cemetery, that was the one I needed!!!

I save all my pix in "albums" on flickr.  Sure saves computer space.
