zero to 60 charlottesville: Memorial Day tour of Maplewood Cemetary

Ghosts & Graveyards, Learning from Charlottesville's Dead
A Memorial Day Tour of Maplewood Cemetary

Maplewood Cemetary, downtown Charlottesville VAIf you've ever wandered through Charlottesville's charming, eclectic downtown neighborhoods, chances are you've come upon Maplewood Cemetary.  It is located on the corner of Maple and Lexington, behind the old Martha Jefferson Hospital, running the full length of a charming street of very interesting small-ish homes on 8th Street NE.  This coming weekend, the Albemarle Historical Society will be hosting a very special tour of Maplewood Cemetary as a part of their series, "Ghosts & Graveyards: Learning from Charlottesville's Dead".

The Society's website describes the event as follows...

On Saturday, May 28th, at 2pm, ACHS will be pleased to present a special tour of Maplewood Cemetery with distinguished anthropologist and historian Dr. Lynn Rainville. The one-hour tour will offer you the chance to learn about historic gravestone symbols, mortuary rituals, and funerals from bygone eras, as well as the answers to these questions: Why were Victorian mothers encouraged to take their children on strolls through landscapes of the dead? Who are some of the famous Charlottesvillians buried in Maplewood Cemetery? Come spend this Memorial Day weekend honoring Charlottesville's own with this special tour. In case of rain, the tour will be rescheduled for the same time one week later: 2pm on Saturday, June 4th. Since this event is limited in time and space, we strongly recommend you purchase tickets in advance.

Tickets are $5, available for purchase on website, www.albemarlehistory.org

Virginia- oddly enough some of my favorite tours have been through the older cemetaries in Virginia and the DC area.  We went on a ghost tour in Leesburg and "felt' a ghost!

That's very cool, Kathy...  I'm a little bit of scaredy cat, I'm afraid.
