I'll be your seven day fool!

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

"Can you show me property this Saturday?" asks a regular client of mine.

"Hold on, let me check my schedule... sure what time Saturday?"

"Around 3:00 p.m.?"

"Sure that works for me... I'll meet you at the first property at 3:00, and we'll go onward from there."

That's the kind of conversation I have regularly with buyers.  I also work on Sunday and every day of the week that ends in a "y".

There are many agents who say that we should set client's expectations.  Some don't work on weekends at all. (although I can't imagine how they manage not to work on Saturday and Sunday in this business.  That's prime-time for me, that's when my buyers and sellers, who have regular Monday - Friday 9:00-5:00 jobs, are available.)

Me? I'll be your seven day fool!  I work every day of the week. I'm one of those who believes in making hay when the sun shines.  And for those of you who don't know that phrase (really, there are some who don't know what that means?) it means You work, when the work is available.  'Cause if you don't show them property on Saturday, I gaar-ahhn-teee that there's someone out there, like me, who will.

Does that mean you have to work seven days a week?  No, of course not ... I often have a weekday that's a little light. Take a day like that and go to the golf course, or the mall.  And I always schedule my family events into my smart phone as "appointments".  Clients don't mind it when you have other committments, but they like to think it's other business... not personal.

You set your own schedule.  But in this market, I believe that it's foolish to turn away business... and I want it to be as convenient as possible for my clients.

Lately I have been working all kind of crazy hours with the a client.  He works in the service dept. of my auto dealer.  Last December when my mom was in the hospital on new year's eve.... I had a head light out, it was raining and I really needed new windshield wipers.... I called and I was in and out in five minutes.  It works both ways... and I work when I need to also.

7 day fool ha?  Such foolishness, I am about to take 7 days off!  I'll let Juli from Scottsdale (I'm gonna stop by her for a visit) know you said hi!   She's from Chicago as well you know.  Do you think she'll like a cheesehead for a hostess gift?  Now, don't be fool hearty Alan, just keep fooling around while I'm gone!

We work when WE decide to work. Weekends, holidays, 2am, whatever. If you don't want to work, tell them your schedule dictates that you can't do it.

I'm with you.  I can never figure out how real estate agents - especially those that work with buyers survive without working at least some weekends.

7 Day Fool - that about says it all!  If we are working with home buyers and sellers, then we are in the retail business and you know when retail customers are available.  Still, it helps to block out a Saturday morning (or Friday happy hour - kinda sacred for me) just to stay sane.

Alan- well I'd have to say you may be a Seven Day _____(fill in the blank), but a Seven Day Fool you're not!  I agree with the phrase to make hay while the sun shines and cannot imagine any Realtor (or Stager) not being willing to work weekends.

You are exactly right....buyers have jobs - or at least the good qualified buyers do LOL! - and MOST of those jobs keep them busy M-F, 9-5.  They need to see properties evenings and/or weekends.

You would have loved the agent (too big for his own socks) that told me when I called on Saturday, that he didn't make appointments and if I wanted to show the place I would have to call the office on Monday.  Don't ask what I went through when I made the mistake of calling on Monday.  Needless to say I refused to show the property.

Alan, this job requires availability to clients when they're not working, at least to find the house. Nothing we do is easy, and we do it 30 hours a day, 8 days a week, just like in the Beatle's song!

Home is where the hearth is.

Dr. Stacey Ann - I can't either.

Kathryn - we are working with 'retail' clients, aren't we?

Kathy - did you just call me a Seven Day ______?

Doug - and so is the movie theatre.

Christine - yes they do!

Frank & Karen - the life of a Realtor.

Jane - if they throw up obstacles when trying to make an appointment, I can't imagine what crap you'd go through trying to negotiate a contract.

Ed - I love it when a comment includes a Beatles song!

Jane's comment notwithstanding, I wonder if some of those people who insist on Sundays off come from smaller communities or if it becomes practice in certain areas? I had several transferees from Omaha over the past year and they were amazed that we expected to work on Sundays here. I can't imagine declaring an entire weekend day off limits.

Gotta "Make hay while the sun shines" is a MUST -- now, where oh, where is that sunshine . . . and you know it's been a hard day's night the past 2 years.

Tish - it has been a hard day's night... and we've been working like dogs!

I think the only way you can truly take the weekends off is to strictly be a listing agent.  Buyers love to house hunt on the weekends, though getting out during the week can be advantageous if you are in competitive market.

Home is where the hearth is.

Chris Ann - even as a listing agent... since buyer's agents work on weekends, you'd find yourself with an offer on the weekend... I don't think that teling the buyer's agent who brings you an offer on Saturday morning, that: "you don't work on the weekends... we'll review your contract on Monday" will fly.

Realtor who don't work on weekends should rather work as bank tellers.....here in Miami Beach many agents don't work all day on Saturdays for religous reasons
