Your Driving Needs and What They Cost

The rising cost of gas has made us all rethink the way we do business, the way we commute and the way we get our errands and daily activities done. It is also becoming a determining factor in choosing a neighborhood and location to live.

The Cost of Gas Today

As realtors we spend a goodly percentage of our time in our cars, showing properties and with gas prices hovering just under $4.00 a gallon we're looking for ways to conserve and cut costs. Even perspective home buyers are focused on cutting down their commuting costs and are choosing homes closer to work and/or public transportation.

But, before we can cut down on prices we need to first know what it actually costs us to get from point A to point B. Cost2Drive.com is a great site designed as a commuter calculator to help you estimate your driving costs. By plugging in the addresses of your start and end travel points, and the year and make of your car it will determine the approximate cost to get there, your travel time and how big the carbon footprint of your route is. It uses the price per gallon cost of the most reasonably priced gas station in the vacinity and will give you both the address for this and the current gas price at this station. Also, if you're planning a longer trip, you can compare the costs of flying vs. drivingat this site too.

So whether you're a homebuyer, real estate professional or just anyone worried about gas prices, you might just want to check out Cost2Drive and see how you can make a dent in your budget.
If you're considering a move to a commuter friendly location, give me a call and I'll be happy to help you find that perfect commuter friendly home in Suffern NY or anyplace nearby.

Lora, you are absolutely right. Even more interesting, related to this story, gas prices here in SF, just one block from my house were at $4.66 regular a number of weeks ago. Then at about the time the feds started investigating gas pricing and futures trading practices, the price stopped going up every day. Then it started to fall. Just yesterday I saw a Shell station nearby with regular at $4.15.

Leah, I have never heard of that website.  With summer approaching it could be  a valuable tool for vacationing families.  I am definitely going to check it out.

John, amazing isn't it the variation in prices between neighborhood gas stations.

Christi - Its really easy to use and its also a good way to find out the location of the least expensive gas station en route.

Christine - I think its already a big consideration to buyers - finding homes near work, or at least in reasonable commuting distance with public transportation options.

Tish - Ever tightening and full of "free".

Antoinette, though I prefer working from the office, I find that I'm often working from home these days, especially so if I'm meeting clients at this end of town.

Leah this is a subject we are all interested in.  These days we spend more time checking on the price of gas.   With the present conditions it is a good time to make sure we are traveling more efficiently.

Jennifer - Always a good practice, but with today's gas prices, a necessity.

Leah, Even more so than ever before, being conservative with whether a trip needs to be made or not, and combining trips.  Returning the movie to Redbox might not make sense as the gas might cost more than the extra $1.06 in rental fee :)

Bliz - I switched to rentals from the local library where you can renew on-line.  Just one of the ways to conserve.

Leah,

Interesting link to that cost to drive app. I just got back from Raincamp, and used it just now; to see how much it cost to do so. Even at expensive gas, it was still a bargain

Scott, despite the cost raincamp is so worth it.  The fact that its a 2-day event now, makes it even more of a bargain.  I missed the one in AC, but I did get to go to NY and Phili last year and loved them both.
