"It was summer 1965 and 18-year-old Janie McQuilia's bags were packed. She, like many of her peers, was just itching to get away from the small farm she had grown up on in South Carolina. She was on her way to what seemed to her like the big city--Trenton, N.J.--and had no plans to look back.

During 30 years in Trenton, she married, becoming Janie Harris, raised three children and worked her way up to be a mental health specialist at the New Jersey Department of Human Services. But after retiring from her state job, she felt the call of a surprising second career: farming. Moreover, her husband, Larry Harris, had promised Janie's mother that after they retired he would try to bring Janie back to the farm."
