Before leaving for your vacation this summer, there are a few safety precautions you should take to protect your home and belongings:

  1. Lock all doors and windows.
  2. Set light timers inside and use photo cells in porch lights (motion sensors).  I always insure an interior light is left on at all times.
  3. For those neighbors you have great trust in, ask them to pick up your mail and newspapers when you are gone on vacation for an extended period.  It is also easy to have your mail held at the post office and temporarily stop your newspaper delivery (if that applies to you).
  4. Invite a trusted neighbor to park in your driveway during your absense to give the appearance of someone at home.
  5. Do not forget your garbage cans; ask a neighbor to bring them in after they have been dumped.
  6. Leave an emergency contact number with that trusted neighbor.
  7. DO NOT POST on social networks about your trip beforehand. Clever thieves are using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other sites to find who is away from home.
