Low cost ways to spruce up your home's exterior

Before selling your home, it's imperative that the exterior is spruced up for a great first impression. First impressions give your home the edge with curb appeal-your home's first impression. In fact many calls to real estate agencies are from prospective buyers who simply drive by a property and love it.

The first recommended step is to clean the exterior of the house. Signs of mold and mildew are a turn-off to buyers. If a professional pressure washer is too costly, consider renting or borrowing one for the weekend. Back decks and patios can also look brand new with cleaning, and don't forget the furniture. Don't forget the outside windows and any glass doors.

Examine the house and outside structures for fading paint and peeling-Painting and touch ups can make a house look new again. Even the smallest details don't go unnoticed. Give your trim, gutters, shutters and downspouts a fresh paint job. Even screen doors may need painting or rescreening. Pay close attention to those items that look weathered or worn. Recoat the deck if needed with stain or a clear weather protector.

Landscaping is a priority that goes beyond mowing the grass. Mulch or straw positioned around plants creates a well kept look. Edge around the driveway and sidewalks where needed. Plant flowers in beds and pots and keep them watered. Trim your trees and plants around the home and make sure they don't block light around the windows of your home. Keep beds free of leaves, limbs and weeds. Rake leaves if necessary and clean out gutters and spouts.

Driveways should be repaved if cracked and weathered. If your budget doesn't permit repaving, at least fix the cracks. Pay attention and makeover or replace your mailbox and lampposts.

The entranceway to your home needs extra attention. Polish your front doorknob or replace it. Flowers and pots can add an extra touch. Splurge on a new doormat. Make sure the doorbell is in working order. Check the lighting fixtures and polish or replace them if worn. Don't forget to check your house numbers also.

Here are some additional pointers on how to make your exterior inviting without breaking the bank.
