As I write this, I am sitting here thinking about getting ready for this evening's event.  This is a verboy scoutsy special event for a seventeen year old young man and his family as it will be a great source of pride once it is completed.

You see, this young man is going in front of an Eagle Scout board of review, which I am proud to be part of.  I sat on four or five of Eagle board of reviews and countless other lower rank board of reviews. What makes the Eagle board of review special is that it has been a long and arduous task for the him to get to this point and that it takes place away from the troop in predestinated place overseen by the Boy Scout district. In other words, there's a lot of hoopla as there should be.

The Eagle Scout candidate must endure extensive grilling by two committee members (I'm one of them) as well as a district representative. We will get to know his hopes and aspirations. What he wants to study, where he is going to college and his career path (the previous candidate is going to George Washington University to become a cardiosurgeon). We will also get to read the letters of recommendations from his religious leader, his teachers, his family friends and parents. In short we will get to know what really makes him tick, even though the committee members have know him, watched and helped him grow through the years.

This is after he has gone through a several month ordeal submitting plans for a service project only to have it rejected (I think they do that intentionally) modified and rewritten several times to the point of frustration. Getting to the rank of Eagle Scout is not easy and takes many years of consistent hard work while performing continuous good deeds and leadership training to the point it becomes engrained in the boy. These boys set high goals for themselves and typically achieve them, but only 4% reach the rank of Eagle Scout.  Just think that every footprint left on the moon eaglewas by an Eagle Scout.

I am very fortunate to be a part of such a great organization and watch these boys come in as scared little rabbits and mature to mentally strong, confident young men over the years. These boys are the future leaders of our great country. They have been taught leadership and survival skills with a strong dose of morals, ethics and core values.  It is because of these young men that I see a bright future for us all and as long as the Boy Scout program is present, I will continue to be active in it in any capacity they need me.

This is my volunteering passion, what's yours?
