Top 7 reasons to move and raise your family in Nanaimo

Four years ago we made a decision to move our family to Nanaimo from the lower mainland.  I have to admit I was nervous about the move and worried about our kids.  We have two boys now aged 12 and 19. As many parents do, I lost numerous hours of sleep worrying about them and how they would adjust.  Fast forward four years and here we are; delighted with our choice to move to Nanaimo!

I would like to share with you why our move turned out to be such a success and why I think Nanaimo is a wonderful place to raise a family.

People - Nanaimo is made up of approximately 80,000 people.  Many of whom, like us, have moved here from elsewhere.  The people are friendly and for the most part happy to be here.  Many of them made a decision to move here and feel that their lifestyle has improved because of that decision.

Nature - Everywhere you look you have choices in how you can to participate in Nature.  You have wonderful Islands just a short boat ride from downtown Nanaimo, you have mountains around you to hike and explore, beaches to beachcomb, and many lakes for canoeing and fishing.

Organized sports - Our boys are hockey and baseball players.  We have been delighted with the choices we have had here for our boy's sports.  The Associations on a whole are well organized and offer many opportunities to kids.

Recreational facilities - Nanaimo has five sheets of ice, plus a curling rink.  We also have two wonderful indoor swimming pools with slides and waves.

Move and raise your family in NanaimoParks and playgrounds - Every neighbourhood in Nanaimo seems to have a park. In fact Nanaimo has what I believe to be the best adventure playground I have ever seen.  It is called Oliver Woods.

Vancouver Island University - Nanaimo now has a University.  It is no longer necessary to ship your kids away to attend university.

Opportunities - By living in a smaller city, with fewer people, I feel that our kids have had better opportunities to enrich themselves at a higher level than they would have had in a larger centre.  The competition is less intense.

I welcome you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about moving and raising your family in Nanaimo.  I have done it and it has been a great success for our family!

Dear Ms. Lynn Donn,

Hello from Japan.  I am a native of Victoria and Canadian citizen, and  am planning on a move back to Canada hopefully within the next year and I am trying to focus my efforts on Nanaimo.  Though I have relatives in Vic and Van., for the reasons you listed, I have had my eyes set on Nanaimo and employment at VIU.  (still working on that one)

I do have a question about moving from overseas.  I imagine that initially we will have to rent a 3-4 bdm. place to start out and then move onto looking into  real estate.  We, as a family of 5, have never lived in Canada and would not be able to produce references in English.  Also our credit rating would only be from what we have recorded in Japan.  My husband and I are both professionals though, and it would be possible to ask my parents, as landowners, to co-sign any leases or deeds, but my question is, would this be necessary?  Do you have any experience in dealing with overseas moves?

Thank you,

Sheri Yasue

Hi Sheri,

Thank you so much for contacting me.  I had a chat with one of the Mortgage specialists I work with - Kim Ross, TD Canada Trust.

Your questions are relevant to many people.  I will be doing a blog post on this subject this week.  In the meantime here is a bit of information:

    • New Immigrant applicants will not have an established credit history in Canada therefore must provide one of the following:
      • Satisfactory international credit bureau, or
      • Satisfactory letter of reference from Bank in their country of origin, or
      • Evidence of liquid assets available in an amount equal to at least 6 months principal, interest and taxes, in addition to the down payment (investment statement/ confirmation must be current and dated within 60 days of date of application).
    • Applicants must be residents in Canada (Landed Immigrant Status) or confirm an application for Landed Immigrant Status has been made and received/acknowledged by Immigration Canada.
    • Verify that no more than 3 years have gone by since the date of being granted the Landed Immigrant Status or the application date for the same, as applicable.
    •
      • Confirmation of minimum 35% down payment plus closing costs, without recourse to additional borrowing and that the funds are in Canada before instructions are sent to the lawyers.
      • maximum amortization 25yrs

I would be delighted to work with you and your family when you make a move here.  I would be happy to introduce you to the city and would also be able to arrange for you to meet and discuss mortgage options with a mortgage specialist.

    Regards, Lynn
