It’s a wonderful thing when you get 70+ comments on your post. You feel like you touched others and brought something to the table. I never thought it would happen to me and when it did, I realized there’s a huge responsibility that comes with it. And that’s to reply to your visitors.

In doing so, I realized that if each comment had a sequenced number attached to it, it would be a lot easier to index through all the comments. I could stop at #16 instead of #10. Especially true when you have 50 + comments and your response line is at the very bottom.

This is food for thought for AR, but I would appreciate others commenting to help these folks weigh the pro’s and con’s.

AR UPDATE:

Re: Ticket 23212, solved

Dear Michael Tarabotto

A new message has been added to the service request #23212.

Michael,

Thanks, we'll take that suggestion under advisement. Assuming no one on the team sees any issues, it shouldn't be too tough to implement. I'll run it by the programmers and the crew tomorrow.

Thanks

18 Comments on Hey AR! Please Number the Comments for Easier Indexing... Pretty Please?

that's a good idea-even when you get fewer comments it would help reduce the eye strain!

Good advice...I think the AR will look into it.  It would make responding much easier.

Hmmm, that is a good idea...not that I have had that particluar "going blind" problem...mine is from so many hours reading blogs in general!

Deborah - I didn't think much of it until that unexpected post that got attention. Then I realized how much easier it would be with sequential numbers. Not many of us log-in daily so when you come back and you have a list of people to reply to... Ouch!

I think this is a good idea, and would also make it easier for commentors to reference previous comments in the thread.

Thank John. I submitted this to AR for review. Perhaps they'll act on it. We'll see what happens.

#9: You're just too popular. I had to take a ticket to write this reply. Nice post Michael and great idea.

Great idea! Thanks for taking the time to act on your idea by contacting AR.

Hey Michael, gonna get this into our next code release for ya.

Another solution that actually maybe a little cleaner is to add the time of the comment right next to the date.  Tried mocking up with comment numbers and it just didn't look very clean.  But if you know approximately when you last read comments you can locate the new ones.

Sounds good. Lets try it. But could you send me (or post) a screen shot of the numbered version? Curious.

Looks like the change to add the comment time in already went live.  I didn't take a screenshot while I was playing around with the numbered version.  Let me know if this change helps at all.
