100-mile yard sale is annual Memorial Day tradition

Liz Lockhart, Cape Girardeau real estate agentYes, you read that right. Memorial Day weekend in Southeast Missouri means a 100-MILE long yard sale that stretches along US Highway 25 from Jackson to Kennett. The mostly rural, usually quiet road turns into a snarled traffic jam all weekend long as bargain hunters crawl along, trying to decide which booth will be their next stop.

While there are stretches of country road that do not feature the booths, nearly every inch of roadside in every small town along the way is covered with vendors. Yards and narrow roadsides turn into parking lots, and police have to work to maintain two lanes of roadway free for traffic.

Residents along the route sell booth space to vendors, many of whom come back to exhibit their wares year after year.

Consult your map and hop onto the route at the starting or ending point or anywhere in between and experience the ultimate in yard sale euphoria!

As the area's ONLY Fannie Mae direct listing agent, I list more foreclosure properties than any other agent in this MLS. I am among the few local agents approved to both list and sell HUD properties. Wow! that is incredible; 100 miles of yard sale. I don't think I could see all the stuff in three days.

Teral~ Even though the sales are concentrated in the small towns along the way, with stretches of non-yard sale country, it is daunting to travel the entire length. Most people hop on somewhere and visit two or three of the towns.

Liz, We had our own one block yard sale, and I've been to one organized on one of SF's piers, but 100 miles has to be a record!

Lloyd~ The weather was great and the turn-out gets larger every year. Any year that does not see wrecks along the way is actually a success!
