Carlsbad Home Inspector Runs Into Bee Invasion!

Today was another beautiful day in San Diego county. I was halfway through a Carlsbad home inspection. So far, nothing unusual or too exciting had turned up, until I entered the attic area...

As I entered the attic, I could see that the insulation behind the furnace had been disturbed. When I got closer, I was amazed at what I saw. There were mounds of dead honey bees laying on the attic floor! I never did hear what had happened (the seller had already relocated to another State), but I'm glad these bees were not alive! Upon further investigation, it became obvious they had gained access at one of the eave vents that was missing a screen.

I've been reading so many articles asking the question, "Where have all the honey bees gone?". Well, I think they've all come here to San Diego County! Several times in the past few weeks while driving down the freeway, my vision has been completely obliterated as I slam into huge swarms of bees fly a low flight pattern across the roadway in front of me. It's like being hit with a machine gun!

Summertime is here and bee activity will be increasing. Now that you've read Carlsbad Home Inspector Runs Into Bee Invasion, you should "bee wise" and "bee-proof" your home. Take five minutes to walk the perimeter of your home looking for any small openings, loose siding and trim, or missing attic vent screens. You might like honey, but you don't want it in your walls! An ounce of prevention can save a pound of honey! Steve Stenros, a Carlsbad home inspector, is the owner of First Choice Inspections and is a CREIA MCI inspector. Clients receive a FREE lifetime appliance RecallChek with every standard home inspection. Appointments can be obtained by calling 888-335-3040.

Wow...looks like they are comfortable in their home.  Not ideal for a new homeowner though.

They're going to need a vacuum cleaner in the attic!

Hi Steve, excellent input for home owners to prevent creatures from entering the home.  And the inspection needs to be done on a very regular basis!

What a scary situation, good thing they were not alive, that would have been horrific.

Steve:

The other day I was shopping in Vista (off Melrose) and there was a swarm of bee's crossing the parking lot and everyone was in a scatter mode, trying to get into their car's and back into the stores. The mystery is what makes them start to swarm?

Steve, good thing they were NOT alive!     That would be quite a surprising sight!    I heard just the other day of someone living in their home, and and a huge bee hive is in their attic.

Dan: It does need to be done often. Bugs and bees can always find a way in, it seems.

Brian: I have encountered live swarms in the attic in the past. Needless to say, that is the end of the attic inspection!

Lorraine/Loretta: Wow! Yeah, that's no joke when you run into a swarm like that! They say the African killer bees are moving into the area. I heard of an incident last year in Menifee where they swarmed a horse and killed it!

Joan: Those guys definitely do get busy when they find a home!

Well I'm glad to hear that you have lots of honey bees in your county, since so many areas are having declining populations.  Our neighbors have lots of bees too, and they give us honey!

Georgina: With all the flowers in Hawaii I'll bet you have an abundance of bees! Enjoy the fresh honey!

A couple of years ago we had bees invade our chimney. The Santa Ana winds had knocked the chimney cap loose and the bees took advantage.

They love chimney areas for some reason, Jim. I've seen a lot of patched chimneys where a bee specialist had to get to them!
