With visions of granite counter tops dancing in their heads, the young couple embark on the house hunting quest. With the sizzle of a habanero pepper, they surf the internet, attend open house events, and tour multiple properties with their real estate agent.
So why is it that six months down the road they are still renting an apartment? With plenty of inventory and low rates home ownership is a no brainer. Yet here we meet our young couple, lugging yet another load of clothes to the laundry mat. Odds are unrealistic expectations soiled the home search.
Like most problems in our society the media is partially to blame. What channel does EVERY house hunter watch? That's right, HGTV. Buyers that seem like them load homes up with high end appliances, fancy flooring, and yes even granite counter tops.
In the same manner Hollywood sets the standard of beauty impossibley high for individuals, HGTV paints an unrealistic expectation for our homes.
Think about it, who pays the bills on cable TV? Yep, advertisers keep the proverbial lights on. And what pray tell would such sponsors advertise on HGTV?? The same fixtures, appliances, and granite seen in the model homes. Think there's some planning behind this??
Find a house that fits your basic needs. Over time, slowly update with features on your wish list. After all Cary Grant looked better at 45 than he did at 20. Why not your home?
