Why do they make such awful movies?

Thanks son, but...

My son gave me a fandango groupon coupon, because he is too busy to go to the movies.  I just spent an hour looking at the available movies and could not find a movie that would be fun, or interesting to see.

Why are today's movies so bad?  Is it possible that more of us have low expectations of movies?  Have our standards been eroding?

Did we get more selective because we have so many other ways to be entertained such as TV, computers, etc.?

Are today's movie producers less talented?  Maybe, they do not value the more selective audience and they produce movies for the majority who likes foul language, violence, and sex?

What do you think is the reason for the lack of good movies; the one who do not push an agenda on society, and are entertaining in a constructive way?

Hollywood produces movies aimed at the lowest common denominator so as to get the largest audience.  The sad fact is our society really is that "low brow."  Unfortunately, we will be seen in history as just another version of the Romans in decadence, and depravity.

Ron, I agree with you that our decadence and depravity would be our legathy, unless we can change the direction of our society.

As we become more desensitized in our everyday life, our expectations of the "WOW" factor has diminished.  Nothing is private so Suspense is gone, Humor is raunchy, and Horror is blatant gore; as far a Romance, well, what do you think?

I guess it really depends upon what you consider a "good" movie. I have seen several recently, although nothing that is out right now. I watch movies for entertainment, there are 3 out now that I feel could be entertaining: Hangover 2, Thor and Priest. While none of them are probably award caliber, I will probably enjoy them. Of course, movies such as The Kings Speech do not come often.

Karl, what do you mean by the tree of life?  The one in the Garden of Eden?

Lois, we have been desensitized with in the last 40 years. Maybe, our parents would say that it started earlier.  There are some romantic movies, but none are memorable.

Mike, the only good movie I saw in the last 6 months was the King's Speach.

Simone,  It is amazing how many awful movies there are.  But it is the same way on TV -- hundreds of channels and not much that is worth watching.

Gary, you are so right.  There is nothing on TV to watch.  I lived without it for a few years.

Close! The Tree of Life is a drama, written and directed by Terrence Malick, and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. The film premiered in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d'Or.

The film opens with a quotation from the Book of Job, when God asks, "Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation...while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?"

From IMDB:

Tree of Life is a period film centered around three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son (Hunter McCracken none SAG) of two characters (Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain) witnesses the loss of innocence.

We trace the evolution of Jack, an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, who is one of three brothers. At first, the world seems marvelous to the child. He sees everything as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, while the father tries to teach his son the world's way, of putting oneself first. Each parent tries to influence Jack, who must reconcile their claims with each other. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

Framing this story is the life of adult Jack (Sean Penn); a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world's preparation, each thing appears a miracle precious and incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life. From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world,

The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family -- our first school -- the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life's single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Karl, thanks for the recommendation.  I will check it out.

I seldom pay attention to the awards given to movies, since the process is agenda driven and politicized.
