Looking for something truly Colorado to do this weekend

Managing Real Estate Broker with The K Company Realty

Looking for something truly Colorado to do this weekend - About 2.5 hours west of Denver on I-70 is one of the most beautiful places in the state, Hanging Lake. Hanging Lake is about 10 minutes east of Glenwood Springs so the drive will be beautiful as you head into Glenwood Canyon. Hanging Lake is so named because once you reach the lake it appears to be "hanging" on the edge of a 6000 foot cliff, gorgeus waterfalls flow into the crystal clear lake from above, in fact you can walk almost all the way around the lake to the top, and on hot days you can even let the waterfalls cool you off.

I discovered Hanging Lake in the 70's when I went for a weekend get away with some good friends to Glenwood Springs, the Boy Scouts have done a very good job of providing hand rails and steps for some of the steeper terrain and they have also built several viewing decks. The hike takes about 1-1.5 hours and it is a pretty good climb in elevation, so take your time, especially those that are from out of state and not used to the altitude. As you make the climb you will be able to look back out over the Colorado River and the Glenwood Canyon. Absolutely beautiful.

Expect to spend 3-4 hours on the hike up and back, and the trip from Denver will take 2.5 hours, so plan a full day, pack a lunch or stop into Vail, Silverthorne, Frisco and any one of the great ski towns that dot I-70 as you head through Colorado.

This has been a family favorite for 30+ years, and now our grown children take their friends their for a nice day trip'

John - I've never been there but I'm definitely adding it to my list of places to visit.  This fits in nicely with the decision my husband and I made to spend the summer in the car touring Colorado.  It feels like we never get the time and there are so many beautiful areas to see!

I hiked Hanging Lake around 10 years ago - it is the most memorable hike I have ever done!  I was so angry because my camera only had b&w film in it but the pictures turned out spectacular - I love taking them out and going over them.

Thank you for highlighting this very special place - it really does seem to just "hang" there.

John, this is our list to do this summer.  We wanted to go last year but the trail was closed for repairs.  Can't wait to see this beauty myself.  Justin has hiked to Hanging Lake before but this will be a first for me even though I have lived in Summit since I was seven...thanks for the pics to motivate me!  --Krystal

Mike- When you mentioned Frisco, I was thinking Frisco, CO, which is just 45 minutes from Hanging Lake, Frisco TX on the other hamd is a little bit farther away

Cheryl- I am sure, I have been to Maryland, but just for a short trip from DC, I would love to spend more time in the area, especially along the northeast coastline

Margeret- Glad to hear you have been there, my son is a photographer (he took the bottom photo) he must have taken 100 photos, many in B & W and those are some of the most spectacular.

Scott- The hike is exhilerating, the scenery is breathtaking and rthe waterfalls are refreshing.

Michele- It is, I will and you do the same. Thank you.

Krystal- I am sure you have plenty of beautiful places to hike in your part of Colorado, Hanging Lake is well worth the trip, especialy as close as you are. Defintitely make sure it is open, I know they have been doing a lot of work near the area.
