Looking for something truly Colorado to do this weekend - About 2.5 hours west of Denver on I-70 is one of the most beautiful places in the state, Hanging Lake. Hanging Lake is about 10 minutes east of Glenwood Springs so the drive will be beautiful as you head into Glenwood Canyon. Hanging Lake is so named because once you reach the lake it appears to be "hanging" on the edge of a 6000 foot cliff, gorgeus waterfalls flow into the crystal clear lake from above, in fact you can walk almost all the way around the lake to the top, and on hot days you can even let the waterfalls cool you off.
I discovered Hanging Lake in the 70's when I went for a weekend get away with some good friends to Glenwood Springs, the Boy Scouts have done a very good job of providing hand rails and steps for some of the steeper terrain and they have also built several viewing decks. The hike takes about 1-1.5 hours and it is a pretty good climb in elevation, so take your time, especially those that are from out of state and not used to the altitude. As you make the climb you will be able to look back out over the Colorado River and the Glenwood Canyon. Absolutely beautiful.
Expect to spend 3-4 hours on the hike up and back, and the trip from Denver will take 2.5 hours, so plan a full day, pack a lunch or stop into Vail, Silverthorne, Frisco and any one of the great ski towns that dot I-70 as you head through Colorado.
This has been a family favorite for 30+ years, and now our grown children take their friends their for a nice day trip'
