Communication Is Key In Brampton, Ontario, Canada

It's important to remember a few key numbers if you live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada
and how to use them.

Most people know about 9-1-1, but did you know it is strictly for emergencies?
If you call 9-1-1 when all you are looking for is information or assistance for a minor need, you may be tying up an important life line on someone who is trying to get help for a life threatening situation. Please only use 9-1-1 to report a fire, crime, downed power lines or to save a life or property.

When calling 9-1-1 try to remain calm and talk clearly. Identify the emergency quickly with information on the location, what is happening and your personal information.  It is most important for children to learn how and when to call 9-1-1.  cartoon kid on the phone

Assistance can be found by dialing 3-1-1 for non-emergencies.
3-1-1 will give you information on municipal government, programs and services that are provided by the City of Brampton and Region of Peel such as garbage concerns, recycling, tax and water payments and recreational programs. 3-1-1 is available 24/7 and is available in 150 languages.

The City of Brampton also provides information by calling 2-1-1.
2-1-1 provides information on social, health and government programs and services as well as local community information.

Good evening, Al & Peggy. Pretty neat. Do they have a 1-1-1 for us dummies that get technically challenged?

Al & Peggy, You're right about getting your numbers straight...a lot may depend on calling the correct one the first time!

LOL Michael! But you are the last person we would think is technically challenged!!!

Yes absolutely Wanda.  We can't believe that people call the emergency 9-1-1 to find out where shoe stores are. This could cost delays in sending medical help to someone in need.

Al and Peggy,

It's surprising how many calls 911 gets that are non-emergencies. Hopefully, someone who doesn't know will see this post.

Hey A & P, that's the4-1-1 on 9-1-1. Calling 9-1-1 when not needed is also a criminal offense and would get somebody a heavy fine.. Not long ago I read a police blotter story on a man that called 911 because he ran out of beer, was drunk, and called the police as he felt it was an emergency, and wanted the police to deliver him beer.

Great post, I like the idea of the 311 non-emergency, I don't think we have one down here

We have to keep advising Brian. We thought it was a well known fact 9-1-1 was for medical and life threatening emergencies but apparently not.

Its probably a staggering number Michelle!

Good line Ed, the 4-1-1 on 9-1-1 too bad we didn't think of that! Your story would be so funny if it weren't so sad!

Yes, we thought it was a good idea too Brian Wondering about something call 3-1-1!

Al and Peggy I did not realize that people did that, but I guess that is always a possibility.

The last four digits of my home phone number are 9110, and my elderly father in-law when he was alive would every once in a while leave out the last digit when he was calling the house.  When that would happen it would come up on the 911 system and they would respond, even though he had dialed the three numb prefex before it.

I would love to see 211 implemented uniformly in each region Al and Peggy, thanks for the information on 311

Out here if you use 911 inappropriately, you can be arrested, fined, and/or jailed, and they do it, too!

Also, if we dial 911 from our cell phone, it takes us to emergency services for the Highway Patrol. Now that just doesn’t sound right on the surface. I presume they think that if you’re mobile and dialing 911, you must be in a car on the highway. However, they also have all these signs on the freeway that say “Don’t talk and drive,” so I’m totally confused! Maybe it’s time to go to the beach and have a margarita.

Good stuff....it's a good 1, 2, 3 on the 9-1-1 use.......I'd give the same advice here as well.  At least you're giving it!

Oh wow, that is funny and awful all in one George....nice to know though that 9-1-1 is able to respond in case someone is in need of help and can't get the numbers straight.

It probably will follow Chris, we see several other regions have implemented 3-1-1, so hopefully 2-1-1 will be set up also.

9-1-1 is an important life saving number Russel and so we agree with San Diego fines. With the common use of cell phones as home phones now it is strange they would assume it is a call for road help. Enjoy the beach and Margarita!

Thanks Larry, people need to be aware 9-1-1 is not a general information number.
