Should your car "SCREAM" the message, REALTOR on board?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams GCW

Just came back from a seminar in Columbus that was attended by perhaps 400-500 agents.

The parking lot was packed to overflow and I was one of the latest (as usual) arrivals.

Upon rolling through the parking lot and subsequently the "grassy knoll" behind the lot, I had the pleasure of seeing many of the highly decorated vehicles of my brethren in the biz.

There were the usual cute and catchy vanity plates that seem to work for any profession OR obsession, but then there were the full door stickers and the window signs and the tailgate billboards and so on.

Does this form of blatant advertising really work?

Do these folks get stopped in the drive thru while getting coffee and asked to take a listing right there in the parking lot?

I'm not being critical of this practice, I'm just questioning the efficacy of the nature of this form of self promotion.

While plumbers, exterminators and electricians drive heavily branded vehicles, should REALTORS?

If my cardiologist had magnetic signs on his Bentley advertising his services, I might look elsewhere for a new doctor. If my attorney had a slogan painted along the edge of the spoiler on his Porsche, would I feel safe in his hands?

There was another post about this thing a while back and the responses were varied. I think it is very hard to write down the number or catch a name on the side of a vehicle unless you are parked or side by side as you drive. I don't think it is that effective but I'm sure a ton of people will tell you it is everything.

I have wondered the same thing too.   A collegue of mine was getting his tahoe decked out with a similiar message.   "Call Emerald Pacific Mortgage".  I wondered if I should do the same?...

I think its good for branding. If it's your company you'd want several agents driving around with your logos etc. on their cars. I'm not to sure about personal marketing but I think it helps the company as a whole out.

As with any business marketing, it depends on your target market. There are some markets where this may not work, however; on the flip side I would imagine for branding and for conversation these people create quite a buzz with their logos plastered on everything. People love to talk real estate, so what not a better way to let people know that your a REALTOR.

I think I know where you are headed with this. Although we want to brand ourselves as much as we can. Do we really want to to do it in the same vein as plumbers, electricians, and the like. You make a good point doctors and lawyers don't do it. We expect those other professionals to brand themselves the way they do. We are dealing with a higher end product than the vast majority of businesses out there. I feel the value we have to offer is not just our name and picture on the side of our vehicle. It's in what we can do for our clients, putting that on the side of your vehicle, just does'nt make sense to me.

That's a good one. I for one never had any signs on the car. Thought about it a lot, but decided against. I still think that tis could be done, tere is a south florida realtor, who also has a sign company and a truck, so when he did not need the truck for business, he would put the truck in the parking lot of a mall, so that people see it. He claimed this worked, and I have no reason not to believe him. However, magent signs on the door are cheap stuff/

I think if the sign is simple it would not hurt!

A Realtor and doctor are 2 totally different businesses.I have had people pull along side one of my realtors at a light and ask for a business card.Another was approached in a condo community because they saw his panels. So,yes, they are worth the small investment....it is always best to keep your name everywhere!

I have a tailgate wrap.  It gets noticed.  Brand-building.

I also have a car with only a Keller Williams license plate on the front and a personal license plate frame, and that is all I will likely put on the car.

I have considered paying folks a monthly fee to wrap THEIR cars.

The Pennsylvania Realtor monthly magazine had an article about personalized advertising on cars this month. A buddy of mine's decked out PT Cruiser was one of the 3 featured vehicles with pictures.

The only problem is that he lost his third transmission in the PT back in June and the car has been parked in his company's parking lot since then (he's the broker) and he purchased a new SUV that hasn't been personalized yet.

If you have a very expensive car , I don't think it is a good idea. You should not draw too much attention to your life style. That is just my opinion.

While I have never received a call from it, it is effective for branding and name recognition.  While interviewing with another broker after only a year in business he nearly fell out of the chair.  You see, I drive by his neighborhood almost daily and he has been seeing that darn thing for a year straight almost daily and it was pounded in his head that he saw it more than that:  for years and years and years.

Tacky?  Maybe.  Psychologically effective?  Most definitely!

If you want more business, or need more business, than this is a cheap, and possibly effective way to do so. Other than thinking it looks tacky, what issues could you have with more advertising?

I know the Real Estate course can be difficult, but to put us up with lawyers and and Doctors, REALLY?  We are very important, but that's a bit crazy.

Your cardiologist went to four years of college, four years of med school, and then did a two-four year residency.  Realtors got to school for one week.

I'm a college graduate as well, but if putting my company's contact information on my car gets me one sale a decade, I'm going to do it.  I'm not that proud.
