How Will You Observe Memorial Day?

Memorial Day used to be solemnly observed by remembering those who died in service to our country. Flags were flown at half mast, stores were closed and there were parades, speeches, and prayers.  But times have changed and now many observe the long Memorial Day weekend at the beach or shopping the Memorial Day sales.

Until 1971, we observed Memorial Day on May 30; in the National Holiday Act of 1971, Congress declared it would be held on the last Monday in May to allow employees a 3-day weekend.  There are some who would like to see the day restored to its former date and measure of respect. Senator Inouye of HI has introduced a bill to every new Congress (every 2 yrs) since 1989 to restore the observance to its original date.

Regardless of how you observe the day, please take a few moments on Memorial Day to remember all who have died in service to our country and give thanks they were willing to fight and die for our freedom.

Every day is a day to say thank you to our men and women who serve and have served our country.  Tomorow is the day to shout it out so they know we truely appreciate what they do for us every day.

I think that may explain why Memorial Day lost so much of it's meaning.  A three day weekend is what it means to too many.  I think restoring the original date would be a great reminder.  It's not about picnics, hot dogs, long weekends at the beach..it's about the men and women who gave their lives in service to our military.
