On Saturday I read a local online article about many of the area boy scouts, cub scouts, brownies and girl scouts troops participating in the 28th Anniversary "We Remember" Memorial Flag Ceremony at the Baltimore National Cemetery on Frederick Road.
In honor of Memorial Day, this annual event gathers approximately 1,500 young volunteers on the Friday evening before the weekend begins. They respectfully place an American Flag on every one of the 45,000+ grave sites in the 72-acre cemetery. The Baltimore National Cemetery was formally dedicated 70 years ago on Memorial Day, Monday May 30th 1941
As an area resident I was aware of a cemetery, a few years ago I sold a home directly across the road, but I never had a reason to visit and appreciate the enormity of the grounds. After reading this article I took my camera and went for a drive. Visiting hours are till 5pm every day.
As you drive into the cemetery it is indeed a sombering site. Meticulously placed identical white headstones stand to attention in long lines as far as the eye can see. Large American Flags flutter in the sticky breeze. The smaller American flags, placed by the young volunteers on Friday evening, perfectly contrasted with the bright white stone. Veterans and their families from many wars and conflicts are laid to rest here. Many were lost overseas, but honored here. One rather poignant grave records the death of a young airman who died on the 16th April 1945, just three short weeks before the end of the war in Europe on the 8th of May. Another very sad grave was of three children born over a 6 year period to a Captain. None of them made it past their first day of life.
I have visited and written about the different War Memorials in Washington DC this year: the Korean War Memorial & The World War II Memorial, but this vast resting ground quietly tucked away on the West Baltimore City line enforces the commitment of our Armed Forces.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Here is a video I created of the Baltimore National Cemetery this weekend honoring Memorial Day 2011
