How come the banks are only rewarding the people that default while people like me that pay their bills ontime can get no help

I have been the model citizen.  Paying my bills on time even if I had to borrow to do so.  I asked for a loan modification when I saw my income about to go down.  It took the bank 5 months to decide I did not need one because I was current.

I also paid down my credit cards and what was the response from the bank?  Cancle my credit lines.  Credit lines I have had open since I was 18.  Never a missed or late payment.

I know it is frustrating....  my advice would be to stay current however if at all possible and if it makes sense for you.  Sorry, I don't have some miracle answer for you....

Jeff - it DOES stink!  We looked at the same thing for my (now-husband) fiance - he was waaaayyyy upside down in a condo, and didn't want to destroy his credit by missing payments on mortgage, credit cards, etc but needed help to get his monthly expenses down.  In the end, it was not worth the gamble of missing payments in case they said "no" to a modification....UGH!
