It's 2:40 EST on Memorial Day, 30 May 2011. My thermometer reads 96.8 degrees F, and we've decided that the last of the weekend chores may just have to wait since they involve such things as mulching and weeding. I was hoping to get out on the Rivanna Reservoir for a little canoeing this afternoon; we'll see about that, too.
We attended a very nice Memorial Day service this morning at the War Memorial located at the U.S. Post Office in Earlysville, hosted by The Earlysville Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Champ Lawson Jr. Post 2044. Six wreaths were presented; the photo shows Albemarle County Board of Supervisor Chairwoman, Ann Mallek, presenting the wreath from the BOS. The second photo shows the Boy Scouts, who were asked to "show their colors", and they were instructed by active military from the National Guard. It was charming, a really nice addition to the service.
The Second Wind Band, associated with the Senior Center, did a wonderful job with all of the music; Wayne Gentry, local country music favorite, lead the singing throughout the service. It was hot hot hot... and it was only 10:00 am. Yet, everyone had a wonderful time, and we look forward to this event becoming an annual event for us.
Earlier this week, I was visiting my father in Newport News. It was hot hot hot there, too. I caught this duck taking advantage of the spray from the fountain...
Memorial Day at over 95 degrees just isn't normal; I think that duck has the right idea.
