Mike Jones recently remarked that adding images in a WordPress blog was giving him some grief.  I thought I'd play with it and see if I could figure it out.

Please keep in mind I am a longtime TypePad user.  I don't know anything about WordPress.  But I figured, hey, one beginner could help another maybe.    WordPress pros will be giggling at me here.  OK, I can take it.

I am figuring that for the purpose of simple blog-post-writing WordPress.com and Wordpress.org behave the same.  These screen shots were taken in WordPress.com.

~~~~~
To insert an image in A WordPress post.
1. Write some stuff in the post editor window.
2. Look at the lower, upload window.
3. Click browse, and locate on your computer the image you want to upload. Click Upload.
0001-upload-window.jpg
4. Choose thumbnail or full size, and specify a link. Click send to editor.
If you want, you can change the position of the image after uploading, by clicking on the image to select it. After selecting the image, click the image icon (the little tree) and set alignment, spacing or border. Click Update.
To upload another image, click the upload tab in the lower window, and repeat the steps.
P S -- For anyone who does not know me.  I am a long time TypePad user.  See:
After reading  Mike Jones comments about WordPress multiple photo issues, I thought I'd experiment with Wordpress (just for the h#ll of it).
Nice Cheryl, for a Typepad person you know WP now.  I am in the process of moving WP.com to .org.  I now have a Bluehost account.  I have just been fearful of making the move.
Bob,  I have been seriously thinking about setting up a WordPress.org blog just to expand my horizons, and to be able to say that I did it.  Not that I don't have any real work to do or anything like that.  <s>.
Thanks for the help. It's so important to be able to use images in a blog post - it attracts so much more attention.
Mike is right in that working with photos in WP can be frustrating if you try to do anything other than just place one photo in the upper left corner.
Sometimes it dumps in a double copy of the photo, especially if you have to cut & paste because it put it in the wrong spot initially. It also doesn't always do a good word-wrap either if more than one photo is used. Initially, I tried using the multiple photos like we can do here, but it is just too frustrating and too time-consuming.
For instance, what you have been able to do with your images in your post above, would have you pulling your hair out if you tried to do that in WordPress - at least the .com version.
Cheryl, thanks for the help!  I was showing a new AR recruit how our system works, and clicked on your name at the bottom of your content on my Wordpress post.  I found you had written an entire post!  Thanks, but I have to ask: "Do you have a day job, or are you a kept woman?" LOL
Big Hug from Tucson,
Mike
Ginger and Elaine:  OK ... multiple images, in various positions.  Let me play with that for a bit.  Later edit .... yes I see the buggy behaviour,the image disappears into two little dots when you use the alignment tool.  Hmmmm....  Let's see if I can find the answer....
Mike:  You'll notice all my posts are timed either pre-dawn hours -- or late-night hours.  :-)
Ginger and Elaine:  Back again.  If you don't mind a few minutes tinkering in code view the issue can be fixed http://cheryljns.wordpress.com/2007/10/11/23/
I'm not yet clever enough to know how to fix it in visual view.  :-)
I'll take screen shots and write a post this evening or tomorrow am, if you want.
EVERYONE:  I just tried a multiple image post using FIREFOX as my browser.  The WordPress multiple image positioning worked just fine without my even touching the code view.
http://cheryljns.wordpress.com/2007/10/11/testing-in-firefox/
I suspect the problem is an INTERNET EXPLORER issue.  Mike, Ginger, Elaine .... Please verify:  are you guys using Internet Explorer?
I will still post a blog later on fixing multiple image positioning using Code View.
I find internet explorer is not very user friendly with wordpress. The key is making sure you know how wide your main content holder is. I have found I have overloaded my main content holder and the pictures overlap and extend out beyond where they are supposed to be. It can be frustrating.
Cheryl, Have you tried posting 2 photos side by side or closer? That is a real problem for me.
Yes I do use IE.
I use Blogjet as a platform for WP and still have the photo problem. My only solution is less photos and more space in between. I also use Misty theme with shadow frames on the photos so to keep the text from running in.
Here is the post I have with the most pictures. After much trial and frustration  I had to eliminate several more that were closer side by side and I could not get to work
Cheryl, the reason you get the two dots in place of the photo is that you have to always manually enter the dimensions of the photo. Unlike AR, where you can enter just one of the numbers and AR will automatically calculate to proper number to keep the perspective correct, in WP you have to get the calculator out to figure what the second number must be to not have the image distorted.
Another problem with WP.com that just started the end of Sept is their text widget boxes. We can no longer highlight the text to either delete it or copy it. There is a forum thread going on the topic, and WP is blaming IE but people with Firefox are having problems as well. And since it just started happening the end of Sept, we're blaming a change in WP.
The other annoying thing that WP does is to "undo" paragraphs when the post is saved. Saving undoes any paragraph formatting. So I have to Save, then edit the first paragraph, by clicking 'enter', then save again. I have to do this for each subsequent paragraph until I get to the bottom. Don't know whether this is a problem with the .org version, but it's a little time-consuming. Plus, there's no ability to have additional white space in between paragraphs the way we can in AR. Adding extra </br> or <p> or <div> doesn't help.
Thanks I had this bookmarked since Oct. My WP blog is up and I was not happy with the how the pictures were going in. So now I have learned to use the tree once they are in. Thanks, I'll test on my post.
Yes, Cheryl, I'm using Internet Explorer.  I still don't have the WP thing down, though.
Mike  Run don't walk to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and download Firefox.
Even if you don't use it as your primary browser there are some things that simply work better with FF (like WP)  and if you dabble at all in creating web stuff, it is  always smart to test on several different browsers.  Sites can look fine in one, and wonky in another.
My personal test collection includes IE and FF, Flock, Opera, Mozilla, 3 verisons of Netscape (including version 3) and Amaya.  It's pretty depressing to look at most stuff in Amaya since it is at the top level of standards complicance.....
Do you know how to customize the right column on WordPress - on the Blog Post itself? I have been able to add the "widgets" to the front page of our blog but not the sub pages or posts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
