A Sticky Invention

Duct tape was developed during World War II as a water resistant tape for sealing cases of ammunition. Today, consumers use it for almost anything, although ironically, duct tape isn't actually considered safe for sealing ducts since most building codes require a fire-resistant product. Here are some clever and some crazy uses for duct tape:

  • Pants too long and no time for the tailor? Temporarily hem your pants by folding a cuff inside of each leg and adhering them with a strip of duct tape.
  • Protect books. Duck® brand duct tape now comes in a variety of colors and patterns, even some that sport university logos, so you can cover your text books in style.
  • Dress best for Prom. Duck brand tape also holds an annual scholarship contest, called Stuck at Prom®, to see who can make the best prom outfit out of duct tape; winners get $5,000 for college.
  • The Web site ducttapefashion.com offers everything from visors and wallets to tote bags and roses - all made from duct tape.
  • Someone just backed into your car and smashed the taillight! For a quick fix until you can get it repaired, (you know you've seen this on the highway) use yellow or red duct tape to hold the remaining parts together. In some states this repair will even pass inspection.
  • Repair a tent. You open your tent at the campsite and oops - a little tear. No problem as long as you've brought your duct tape along. Cover the hole with a patch; for double protection mirror the patch inside the tent. You'll keep insects and weather where they belong.

Profit from my two decades of experience

Christopher-Some very creative uses, thanks for the reminder that as agents we should always have a roll of duct tape in our car trunks.
