Harrisburg came by the name from Mr. Robert Harris and his family in 1874.  Mr Harris owned land in Harrisburg as early as 1766, he sold right-of-way  to the railroad in the 1850s.  The depot then took the name of Harris Depot after the family.  In 1874 the depot underwent a name change and became Harrisburg.  The Harrisburg Depot closed in 1933.

Harrisburg Post OfficeIn 2006 the old depot was moved a few feet from it's original location and reopened as the Historic Harrisburg Post Office and General Mercantile.  The local Farmer's Market is located there and offers fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, homemade baked goods, canned items as well as local craftsmen and is open from 4-7pm on Monday afternoons through October 28th.  This general store offers a glimpse into Harrisburg's rich history.

Our town council is currently working on a project to add a miniature train much to the delight of all of our children.  Harrisburg ParkAlso, if you walk down the trail through the woods behind the post office, it connects you to Harrisburg Park

Harrisburg Park offers something for everyone with numerous soccer and football fields, a covered picnic shelter, paved walking tracks and trails, and a play ground loved by all of our children. Harrisburg Playground

Are you looking for something more organized?  Harrisburg Parks and Rec offers everything from Yoga to Line Dancing to Children's Art's and Crafts.

Harrisburg Youth Association also offers your choice of sports year round.  I know that my children have benefited from the soccar, basketball, baseball, and tennis programs offered.  Also, if you are looking for a way to give back to the community,  we are always looking for coaches and other volunteers to make these programs the best they can be.

Just across the street from Harrisburg Park is our Harrisburg LibraryHarrisburg Library Our library supports our youth and adults with programs from Preschool Story times to Young Adult Book Club, After-school Writing Club, and even Introductory Computer Classes.

Harrisburg is a community full of activity for the whole family.  By spring 2008, we hope to have Stallings Road Park open.  This park will be more geared toward adults.  This park will have a shelter, tennis courts and baseball fields.  It also looks like there may be a pond.  I suppose we will have to wait for the end of the drought to see that!

In addition, Cabarrus County Parks and Rec is hosting the grand opening of Pharr Mill Road Park this afternoon at 4pm.  This 37 acre park is located just next to Harrisburg off Pharr Mill Rd.

Stay tuned for the next Chapter to "Coming Home to Harrisburg." Our community parks and our library are just two of the many reasons I enjoy calling Harrisburg home for my family.  If you would like to call Harrisburg home for your family and would like more information on Harrisburg Real Estate, please contact Virginia Halter at 704-605-4285 or look me up on the web at www.VirginiaHalter.com.
