Kitchen Remodel for $600! Yes...it's true!

What do you do if you need to sell, but your kitchen is stuck in 1985?  Investing thousands of dollars in a renovation would eat into your profits and you don't have much cash on hand for a kitchen update.  Well, home staging statistics have shown that minimal investments usually generate the largest return on investment.  So put down the sledgehammer and pick up a brush.  Here is a kitchen remodel that was done for around $600!

OK Owensboro, Ky and ActiveRain members, here's the skinny on this Home Staging transformation.  The majority of this remodel is credited to the Rustoleum family of products.  The counter tops and cabinets were both refinished with the Rustoleum transformation kits.  These are simple and inexpensive products that produce a great result.  A fresh coat of paint brightens the room while a new glass tile back splash ties the color scheme together perfectly.  Add a new rug, roman shade and some accessories and VIOLA!  This kitchen in now in 2011 and for only $600!

Remember, home staging is not always about spending money to sell, but rather using creativity and skill to re-use what you can, re-purpose what you have and buy only what's necessary.  Let me know what you think about the before and after pictures!  Good luck everyone and Happy Staging!

Wonderful transformation, Melissa!  The kitchen actually looks larger - it's certainly more cohesive.  What product did you use on the  counters?

I used the Rustoleum Cabinet and Countertop Transformation kit.  The cabinets take some time but as you can see, is well worth it.  The countertops were quite easy and fast.  Here is a link if you'd like to check it out.  It can be purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot.

LOVE the results, Melissa! Amazing difference, and for so little $$. Another stager was just writing about this topic this morning on the Home Staging Professionals sub-group of LinkedIn, and while she couldn't put photos on LI, she described similar results. Now I'm really convinced! I'm curious how you charged for this project, though? And how many hours did it take you?

The design plan was part of the Home Staging Consultation fee and the home owners did most of the work.  I worked with them and demonstrated how to do each project but they did most of the refinishing work themselves.  The countertops took 2-3 hours but the cabinets took probably 15 hours over a weeks period.  It takes so long because there are 4 steps which call for 6-8 drying perods.  I'm not going to lie, the cabinets were a LOT of work but well worth it.  This is not only great for inexpensive staging projects, but excellent for low cost home makeovers.  Thanks for the comments!

Melissa, take a look at my blog post from tonight to see the similar (but worse!) problem I am up against with a staging of a pretty horrible kitchen. I'm curious as to how/whether the Rustoleum product would be any better (or not) than painting the very dark kitchen cabinets off-white? What is the advantage of the Rustoleum? Also, do you know how well it might work over a patterned faux marble laminate countertop, and how long it might last? Thanks so much for any further advice you can give!
