Organizing Bookcases

Most of us have them...some are built-in, some are free-standing and some are floating (shelves on brackets).  In my experience, having shelves, or any flat service that can hold an item, can very easily become cluttered. And, I often encounter book shelves that are so full, the visual clutter actually hurts.

PHA recently completed an entire condo re-organizing project.
This couple moved in to their large one-bed, one bath condo in 2009.  But, because of a variety of life factors, they just unpacked and put things away with no rhyme or reason.

They have three free-standing bookcases in the bedroom.  Not only must these bookcases contain their books, they also hold business papers, collectibles and memorabilia. Not an uncommon occurence.

As you look at the before and after pictures, please note how just a little tweaking and finding a home for the items stored in front can make the entire viewing experience that much more pleasant

Peggy, great post on organizing. When staging a home I suggest to clients to de-clutter book cases as much as possible. I wonder when your client unpacked three year back, did they ever really use or go back for 1/2 of what is in that bookcase today? The less is more works well in this case! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Karen.  Actually, most of the books are business related and as the one partner has a very high position at one of our hospitals, I got the impression the books are used on a fairly regular basis.  Thank goodness.  But, yes, if more people would actually ascribe to the less is more mentality, they'd have less stress in their lives!
