The 2011 Hurricane Season is Here... Are YOU Ready?

hurricane evacuation routeThe 2011 Hurricane Season is Here... Are YOU Ready? (Part 1)

June 1st marks the start of the Hurricane Season and it's never too early to make plans and check your supplies.  NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has said that 2011 may be an "above normal" Atlantic season.

We in Florida were spared last year but let's not get too complacent. Please don't wait until the Hurricane Watches and Warnings have been issued.

                        What You Can Do Now:

1Make sure your trees and bushes have been properly trimmed to ensure that branches and limbs will not be a threat to power lines or your house.

2. If you have Hurricane Shutters make sure you know where to put them and how to use them. This may sound self evident but we lived in our house for 3 years before ever having to use our hurricane shutters.
If you plan on boarding up your windows, don't wait until the mad rush is on at your local hardware store.  Measure your windows and buy them now.  Then, be sure to label which board goes to which window.

3. Make a Plan-   Know where your Evacuation Routes and Shelters are.   hurricane notesFlorida boaters, know how to tie down your boats or where you can take yours if you need to.

4. Gather your supplies, including food, water and emergency equipment.  Check to make sure you have plenty of batteries!

5. Check your insurance policies and have their Policy numbers and contact information in a safe place.

6.  Photograph and/or video your property and store it in a safe place.  You probably will not want this kind of information sitting in the clouds so consider sending a disk or thumb drive with this information to a relative in another state.

7. If you've been deferring maintenance on your vehicles, get it done now.  You may need to rely on at least one of them should you need to evacuate.

8. If you don't already have one, prepare a "To Go" Box.  This will include critical items you might need should you have to evacuate... items such as a flashlight, paper goods, a first aid kit, can opener, etc.  Later, should you go under a Hurricane Watch, you'll add your important papers.

Great advice for staying safe this season Kathy. Luckily we get a break up here during summer with severe weather ...after our 8 month long winter season if we had to deal with hurricanes too I don't think I would be living here. I don't envy you though...hurricanes must be frightening to experience. Hope it's a mild year for you all down there.

Kathy.  I fear that NOAA will soon have to wear a "wolf suit".  They have made that prediction every year for the past 3 years and have been wrong each time.

Good morning, Kathy....I have a son who lives in Central Florida....when you folks get a hurricane, you really get hit hard....when we get 60 mile an hour winds, that's enough for us!!

I was speaking to someone last night about how so many wait until three days before landfall to get ready! Good advice, here!

Valerie- Hope your summer weather is a very peaceful one.  All in all, I'd rather have a hurricane than a tornado or earthquake.  At least we know when they're coming.  But... would really rather not have any of it!

Lenn- you're not kidding.  We had one hurricane that hit us directly about 8 years ago that we thought all morning was heading for the west coast of FL.  What's amazing is that there's typically plenty of warning and yet some people still end up the day after the hurricane complaining of having no water or food stored.

Gita- Hopefully with more and more new and updated construction having high impact windows that may help but when a twister from a hurricane hits... not much you can do.

Barbara- oddly enough, you don't think of Central FL as being as vulnerable but FL isn't that wide and Orlando took a hit several years ago.

BARFF- well, when I become head of the Nat'l Hurricane Center.. I shall name one for you!

Gabe- from your mouth to you know who's ears... let's be ready and then hopefully we won't have to worry.

Gary- yes, it always is astounding how many people take absolutely no precautions.

Sure makes sense to be prepared, Kathy. Especially since there is some warning before landfall. Good info.

Wayne- It really doesn't take much to be prepared but if you wait it seems like an insurmountable task.

As an owner of a condo right on the beach I have #5 and #6 done. But since I am still dealing with government claims over the BP spill I really don't want to have to start in on hurricane issues so I'm praying it is a quiet year.

I don't know about hurricanes but it sure feels like the tornadoes have been hitting hard and frequently!  Your tips apply for tornado prep too!

Hi Kathy,

Great advice!  So much good information for those that are threatened by Hurricanes.  This information would also be good for us Californian's who have to prepare for earthquakes. Such as: Make a Plan, Gather your supplies, Check your Insurance Policies, Photograph your property, and prepare your vehicles!

This is an excellent list and I am suggesting it.  Thank you Kathy...  we all need to be properly prepared in case anything happens... you just never know.  All the best to you and I hope you are not affected by any disasters!
