Greer CPW & Laurens Electric Settle Utility Dispute; New Renewable Energy Facilities Planned for South Carolina

Development in the "Golden Box" area south I-85 near the airport moves forward this week as two utility companies settled a dispute out of court over who will provide service to the area.  The Greer Commission of Public Works (CPW) and Laurens Electric now have a 20-year agreement where CPW will purchase power for the areas that it annexes.  This announcement comes on the heels of a previous suit with Spartanburg County where CPW is allowed to provide sewer hookups to new developments only after annexing property. With large commercial projects starting south of the interstate and a new hospital off highway 14, more activity is on the horizon.

Waste Management Inc. is planning 60 renewable energy facilities where methane from landfills is utilized for industrial consumption.  They currently pipe the gas from the Spartanburg landfill to BMW to run turbines. The methane gas runs about 63% of the plant's energy use.  Two of the new facilities are proposed for South Carolina.
