The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek is a Great Asset to the Community

The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is a great asset to the community.  The Binder park zoo consists of approximately 600 specimens of over 140 species including one of the largest giraffe herds in the United States. Binder Park Zoo

The zoo also contains 32 rare and exotic animal exhibits plus 19 domestic animal exhibits.  They are one of a handful of self-supporting nonprofit zoos in North America.

The Binder Park Zoo is not supported by tax subsidy, and generates its $4.2 million operating budget through operations (89%) and the remainder from gifts and grants (11%).   This is quite an achievement for a zoo.  Each year, hundreds of adults and youth volunteer to support tBinder Park Zoohe zoo and its staff in the running of events.

As a local Realtor, I have long been a supporter of the Binder Park Zoo.  I have participated annually in their ‘A.D.O.P.T.' program, which stands for: ‘Animals Depend On People Too'.  This program allows one to contribute on various levels, and adopt an animal for the year.

Binder Park ZooThose that participate receive an adoption certificate, an animal fact sheet about the animal they adopted, a name on the honor roll at the Miller's Children Zoo Exhibit and photograph of the adopted animal.  You can adopt as many animals as you like, and once in 2007 I raised $1000 through my church for the zoo using this program. Here is a photo of me giving the zoo a check.

You can also donate a brick, which they include on their walkway between the carousel exhibit, and the train to take you to the ‘Wild Africa' portion of the zoo.  For more information on this, you can check it out on the Binder Park Zoo Donations page

So the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is a great asset to the community, and it is something that I mention to new homebuyers moving into the area.  If you would like to know more about the community, or are interested in buying or selling a home in the Battle Creek area, give me a call at 269-441-8182 or contact me through my website at: www.JustCallMichael.com.

Michael, put me in a zoo and I'm a kid all over again! What a wonderful day to spend the day! I didn't know A.D.O.P.T stands for Animals Depend On People Too. That's was very clever of whoever thought of that and it go straight to my heart, just like your photographs! I'm glad to hear that you're a support for the cause. The world needs more good people like you.

I like all of the pictures, especially the Leopard. I have taken photos of zoo animals and many are now framed in my office. I am reminded of wild animals like this daily. You can't imagine how exciting it was to visit your post this morning!

Michael - I love zoos and at least once a year I take my nieces and nephews to the Bronx Zoo (it's only 45 min from where I live.) The Binder Park Zoo looks like a really great one - you captured some great shots! Who says you have to go to the Serengeti to see big game?! The leopard is a great shot!

Patricia and Kristine, thank you so much for your comments.  It is actually a cheetah, not a leapard.  A very beautiful animal, and one of my favorites to visit when I go there.

The ADOPT program might be used by others zoos, so I do not know if Binder Park created it, but it sure is a popular program to support the zoo.
