A Basin webcamThe earliest open ever happened today at A Basin.  With only one run open the place is packed!  It's hard to believe they could do it.  It was probably a shorts day on the mountain, here in Frisco I ate lunch outside.

I swiped this image from A Basin's web cam.  I thought many of my readers would be reading this blog in the middle of the night and wouldn't be able to get a current image on A Basin's web cam.

Of course A Basin's greatest draw this ski season is the new 400 acre addition, Montezuma Bowl.  It is slated to open mid December - depending on snow conditions.  (After A Basin's amazing open today it doesn't seem to me that A Basin relies too much on natural snow and can make their own better than anybody else.)  Montezuma bowl is located on the backside A Basin and will house 36 new runs; blues, blacks and double blacks.  After skiing the bowl a 9 minute chair lift, the Zuma Lift, will get you back up to the top.  This new addition increases A Basin's terrain by 80%!

I thought I was getting excited for ski season to begin this year.  After today I suppose I'm really not that excited or I would be at A-Basin right now instead of here blogging!

Well, they got bragging rights.  The first ski area open gets lots of free publicity, and they were never able to do it before they got snowmaking.  They are usually the last ski area to close too, often as late as July 4th.  I bet it was a zoo there today!  It looks like it in the photo.

I haven't skied at A-Basin since I was a teenager, well over 10 years ago. Maybe with the addition of Montezuma Bowl it's time to check it out again.

Yes, it was on our evening news here in Ozark country.  Enjoy.

Joanne - I drove by on the second day open just before 9am and there was a line waiting for the lift to open.  As we continued down the road we saw quite a few more people headed up with their ski/boarding gear on top of the car.  I think a lot of the skiiers/boarders like the bragging rights too.

Jason - I was thinking the same thing myself!

Joan - It's like Joanne said, the first to open makes the national news.  The other mountain opening days probably won't make the news.

haha wow, I would not want to be there when they first open "1" run if you can call it that.  I'll wait for the real stuff.  But man I can't wait, got my skis on right now as I wait for the snow to hit. Oh yeah....GO ROCKIES

Stephen - I'm getting excited too, but not that excited.  But that one run does have an 18" base!

I think I met you at the Blog Fiesta, right?
