Please Don't Wake Me Up!

In the area of San Diego where I live, we have these gigantic black crows that chase other birds especially owls and hawks. We have what seems to me at least a lot of wildlife in the neighborhood, especially birds, coyotes, rabbits, skunk, possums and raccoons. The crows sort of gang up on the owls and hawks especially and it seems like a daily battle. Early this morning, before the black crows make their appearance, all the other birds were chirping ( singing their good morning songs ) and this one, yellow chested whatever it is, was just carrying on like he was the happiest thing on the planet. ( in other words he was making a lot of noise which I recorded because he has quite a vocabulary of sounds).

Backyard Hawk

I was looking at where he was perched and as I was scanning the trees near him, I saw this hawk still trying to get in some shut eye before the black crows come and chase him all over the place. I rushed to get my camera in hopes of getting at least a quickie shot before he moved off but I was able to take quite a number of shots and finally he must have heard the clicking of my camera and he turned his head to me and opened his eyes.

Backyard Hawk

I sort of felt bad that I disturbed him but when I turned off the camera, he simply closed his eyes once more. We have all had those days I suppose, where we just want the world to leave us alone and we are thinking as we close our eyes, "Please don't wake me up" !

If you want to know what made me post this, it was because that tired look on his face reminded me of my little Yorkies ( which I miss so much) when I would wake them up in the morning and they would look up as if to say to me, "please Dad, let me sleep, it's too early to get up".  Perhaps for this bird, it was just too early as well.

Hi Chris, I saved an owl from their attack when they chased it into my Christmas net lights. I untangled the owl and held it wrapped in a white towel. What a beauty it was. The hawks en mass try to dive bomber attack the hawk. They have no fear of it at all. Of course they also go after the neighbors kitties , rabbits etc. But as group they don't the hawks or owls. Perhaps it is a competition thing for the food ( prey ) on the ground. They are not very silent about it either, LOl.

Hi Virgina, I guess they may be smart but also some of the noisiest pests I have ever seen. But I really appreciate the Raptures.

Hi Jeff, You know your birds. While I like them all ( crows don't impress me much) I don't  know most of the bird varieties that like to fly around the neighborhod. Some of them are really cute and others are just .... well, brown, LOL.

Cool picture -- we have crows the size of eagles up here in Tracy CA too... they drop walnuts from the sky to crack them open...

The ones here are nearly that big. Certainly the wing span. And when they scream en masse while going after the other big birds ( no relation to BIG BIRD of course, hehehe) it can be really annoying.

Hi Chris, I think it was just the camera noise. But I did like it that he looked over at me. But it only took a minute or two before he just went back to sleep. He stayed in place for a while and then the crows all come and off he went. Odd when we are rooting for the hawk that likes little kitties and little puppies. LOL. But I really felt for him because the crows are relentless.

William, Great photos!  It is fun to see wildlife close to home.  Early the other morning, I had a herd of mule deer cross the road about a block from our street.  It was only fun because they crossed far enough ahead of me that I had plenty of time to slow down!  We also see a lot of the other wildlife here, another reason that I love living here!

Hi Tony and Darcy, Thank you. I saw my first Mule Deer in Yosemite. I love the wildlife but keep a safe distance. A couple months ago, I had a family of raccoons that wanted to come in the house. One of the youngsters was a bit aggressive and he stood up against the glass. It wasn't hissing or anything, looked cute and innocent but I felt it best to just leave them alone, shut the light out, closed the blind and when morning came, no evidence they were even there.  But I sure wish I could hve taken photos decided best to leave well enough alone. If I saw one or two I might reconsider that but I think at least 5 and didn't want to deal with the possibilities.

I often close my eyes when I'm stressed.  It's a protective mechanism. . .Out of sight - Out of mind:-)  To give you an example, I had a bit of a rough day yesterday.  So when the going gets rough, the rough goes swimming.  I was in the pool swimming laps while daydreaming my problems away.  My eyes were closed.  I transported my mind so far away from everything, that I jammed my right hand into the wall.  I quickly found that one doesn't only fall asleep at the wheel. . .LOL

Hi Myrl, Sorry to hear that, I hope you are OK. That must have stung pretty good. The best falling asleep I do is riding in a car. Love it but just don't get to do it often enough, :-).

Hi Roy, He is a pretty big fellow as well. I am sure I said much about that but when he flys around, it is amazing the wing span.

Hi Margaret,

Thank you so much. I think of it as a labor of love, :-) The Yellow bellied whatever was a small bird that sings a lot. He sits on the neighbors chimney and has least 40 or so different tunes he sings. I tried to get a picture of him and while doing that is when I saw the Hawk in the neighboring trees. So , they are two different birds. This looks to be what they call a red tailed hawk but I don't see any red tail feathers so I have no idea how they came up with the name. :-)

William,

This is a wonderful story and it had to be an exciting moment for you too! Your pictures came out just beautiful, as did your nature story. That bird must have known that you are a friend to nature and somebody safe. Isn't it an opportunity of a lifetime to be allowed into their world?

I really enjoyed your story!
