27 Comments on The American Flag should have a little more repect... don't ya think?
Tammy - WOW!!! Very informative! I knew some of the flag rules but had never read the flag code - thx for the link. Heck, there are even codes for wearing flag pins people!
Donne- Yup, left lapel close to your heart. :) Each state also has its own flag code.
Tammy-I too didn't know about the code. I think it is down right disgraceful when anyone is disrespectful of our flag. I too speak my mind more now than I used to. Must be the gray hair as you said. Have yourself a great evening.
Tammy ~ It is a too bad most people do not know the true etiquette for our flag. Recently my brother (retired Navy) burned his flag and his son had a tizzy fit. It is the proper way to retire a torn or worn out flag.
Sharon- :) Getting older has its advantages.
June- I saw one Memorial Day ceremony that had a fire just for that reason for people to come and place their worn flags to be be burned. I thought it very fitting.
Hi Tammy, I can remember going to camp as a young girl and every morning there was the ceremony of raising the flag and evening lowering it. I can still picture them folding it in that proper way and with respect while we said the pledge. Very timely and informative!
Cindy- I recently replaced my flag as it was beginning to show wear and I'd been meaning to write about this. Today I found the time. We actually always said the pledge and played the national anthem when I was in school... but not in public schools anymore.
I think one of the things that bothers me most, is when I see a flag waving that is tattered or fadded. It's better to not fly one at all, rather than fly one in poor condition!
Tammy, I agree with you! The flag deserves more respect!!!! I know that those that fought and died for it earned it that much!! I also agree that if you're going to fly it, take it down at night unless there is a light shining on it, and maintain it. Bring it in out of the storm when possible and when it gets tattered and torn, retire it with respect and replace it!
Good job Tammy! As a Vietnam Veteran, I've always been sensitive to the misuse of our Flag. Who knows when it began. Blame it on some country western singer that had a shirt made to look like the Flag, or maybe a hippie protester hanging one upside down in his van. Respect for so many things seems to have waned over time. As I read thru all the comments, I'm encouraged by the awareness. Thank you for taking the time.
Myrl- that chaps my behind too.
Tony & Darcy- I just don't get it when folks put it out and then leave it forever until it's shreds on stick.
Bill- I don't know when it started either, but it bothers me to my very core. I want to smack 'em the head like Gibbs does Denozo on NCIS.
Very informative information Tammy. We were so impressed that our local Marine Corps League placed a Red Box at the Memorial Park in downtown Murphy where you can place your worn, torn or faded flags for the proper retirement - which is very interesting and respectful.
Carol- that was a great post, I'd never heard of it, but it gave me a really great idea... so thanks.
Hi Tammy - such a great post - and with the US Flag Day approaching it's so very important to be cognizant of the protocols that this national symbol deserves. I do make allowances, though, for the exuberance of some (typically sports fans) and I admit I have a number of items of clothes with the Canadian flag on them (full disclosure, I am Canadian!). But the flag has incredibly deep meaning and thank you so very much for highlighting the Code! (this one deserves a big re-blog to continue to pass the info along!)
Well written post Tammy...disrespect for any symbol of the nation you reside in is shameful (IMO) and should not be tolerated.
Karen- I used to own and wear things with the American flag, but after 9-11 I made a choice to change that. The clothing hanging in our closet now with the American flag is my husband's uniforms.
Anita- I agree 100% and I won't be quiet about it anymore.
I didn't know the flag needs to come down at night until last week. When we were in Ione, CA, last weekend, lots of red, white and blue banners were hung from homes but very few flags. My husband said it's so they don't have to take the banners inside at night like they would the flag.
Elizabeth, also a flag can stay at night if it is lit. But I'm a take it in kind of person.
Hi Tammy....I totally agree....I get bugged when I see Americans disrespect it....but when I see a foreigner .....burning it......that really gets to me.....If we were to do the same with their flag....how would the feel.
Aida- I'm just the opposite, I am not nearly as offended by foreigners burning the American flag. I don't care if they have no respect for it. Now Americans... I just want to smack.
