Aquaculture farms thrive in Virginia because this great state made a sound business decision in the 1900's to offer ten-year, renewable, oyster bottom leases--at a nominal rate--to private growers.
Clams are perfect candidates for Aquaculture. If clams are harvested in the morning, they can be on your dinner table or at your favorite seafood restaurant within a 24-hour period. This is possible because the largest producer of farm-raised, hard-shell littlenecks in the United States, Ballard Fish & Oyster Co., is harvesting those little jewels all along Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Aquaculture in Virginia is not limited to clams. Bass, trout, catfish and prawns are among some of the other varieties of seafood that are raised and harvested according to the dynamics of Aquaculture. Aquaculture is responsible for Virginia having the distinction of producing and serving the freshest seafood possible.
