My Next Tablet and Why I Chose the Ipad 2

By

For the past year I have been waiting and watching Realtors integrate tablets into their daily tools. I prefer to use an ultra portable laptop because of the physical keyboard and access to programs and intensive software if neccessary.

I finally decided to go with a tablet this year and I chose the most popular product the Apple iPad 2.

I like Android and the open platform and flexibility of apps. I gave up my iPhone 2 years ago for an Android and never looked back. Many people are surprised I decided on the Apple tablet. Here are my reasons.

Apps Typically Release First for Apple
There are 2 different operating systems Apple vs Android. Apple has one device programmers only have to design for. Android is an open system to every manufacturer with different hardware, different screen sizes, different specifications, different everything. Eventually app developers will have to think like Microsoft where Windows can run on any system. For now developers create mainstream apps for Apple before they create them for Android and this is noticible in real estate apps.

Accessories
Next time you are at a Target or Walmart look at the Apple accessory and product aisles. Rows and rows of products for Apple's devices. Over 10 years ago I purchased Apple stocks because I saw all the accessory displays created for the very first iPod. Best stock investment I ever made. Everything and anything you can imagine is available to personalize an Apple device. Android's open system and multiple devices are going to be harder to find manufacturers producing alot of accessories for because those products will refresh and change every year as well.

Resale
Do you know there are still daily lines each morning in front of some Apple stores for the Ipad 2? Most retailers in Houston are still sold out. I ordered the iPad 2 last month and after 3 weeks, it should be here Monday finally. I believe the iPad 2 is the most genius product launch in the history of the world. People camped out the first day, and still line up to this day to get one. When it comes time to switch to a new tablet, I'm sure someone will want my Ipad 2.

Eventually apps will roll out for both platforms at the same time and be universal to any tablet hardware of choice. I will probably retire my iPad 2 for an Android tablet after 2 years of service. The speed of technology is inevitable. Quad core tablets are scheduled to come out later this year replacing current duo core models. In an internal memo a chip manufacturer outline their products for the next 5 years. 2012 tablets will be 2x as fast as 2011 tablets. 2015 tablets will be 100x faster than 2011 tablets.

Application to My Real Estate Business
I'm still trying to determine if this can really be a laptop replacement. I will use it for PowerPoint listing presentations, email, and internet access. I'm concerned about the screen size for presentations. If I can draft, modify, and electronically sign contracts on the iPad like I envision this will be all I need to carry and more innocent trees will be spared.

I'm interested in hearing how other real estate professionals are integrating tablets into their business. I'll share how this works out in mine as I begin integrating it.

I am going to get one in a few weeks to do contracts and docusign. It seems the trend to be paperless - finally.

Lori I love love love DocuSign. With the popularity of e-signatures and their acceptance today it makes my life much easier when dealing with international clients. Im also looking for a solution for clients to sign directly on the device with a stylus pen.

Dear Mike,
I came to your profile tonight looking for a link because I am mentioning a post of yours in my blog as a reference.
BUT I had to stop and read this post.  I, too, have and am very satisfied with an android system smartphone. REALLY interesting that you are going with the iPad2 until the android, in your opinion,  "catches up" so to speak.
A favor - please - would you post this at the ANDROID Tablet Users Group also?  You make so many interesting points, I think it would benefit anyone reading posts at that group. (I know the person who started the group pretty well and I am SURE it would be a welcome addition to the posts there.)
In the end, we are all here to learn from one another. So your thorough opinions will benefit the readers even if they decide to go with the "i" crowd.
Have a happy day -
Lynn

Jessica it took me a while to decide and finally go with Apple mainly because of the apps. Similar Android apps have taken months or a year later to roll out. I decided on a tablet to stay ahead of the competitive edge in the industry.

Stacia feel free to share! I can't wait to integrate it and phase out the need for a laptop.

Vickie I will try to blog about the different apps I purchase and how I use it in my business once I get started. Hopefully others will share what works and does not work for them.

Lynn thanks for the link. I notice it takes MLS, and real estate companies months longer to create apps for Android well after they release for Apple. My point for buying new technology is staying ahead of the curve. I came across the Android forum, and I didn't want to offend anyone in there.

You will be glad you selected the iPad 2. It's a cute gadget but most of all, it works. Michael installed TeamViewer for me so I can access my pc at home. I dont have to lug the thing all over town now.

Loreena thanks for the tip about TeamViewer. I have to look into that. Not sure if the Apple OS is friendly with my Windows PC.

I can't wait for it to get here. I ordered it from Apple 2 weeks ago when they were out of stock at all the stores. Now I can walk across my office parking lot to Target and pick one up.

Mike - tablet does help but to me, it still does not replace the laptop. We used the iPad for email, MLS searches, finding business information on the web...etc. I have tried using Mobile ZipForm and that has a learning curve to me. Docusign definitely is great but do need to learn to use the mobile version too. Once you learn to use them, it will probably help you on the go.

Especially good comment about waiting for the Android to catch up. Am pretty sure I am going to get the ipad 2 also. Am just trying to decide how many gigs and if to go for the Verizon connection... thanks for the info.

Mike- I've been having the big debate of iPad vs Samsung Galaxy, and I've been leaning towards the iPad for the very reasons you stated.  But I have a question... what about a usb port and Flash?

Mike my iPad delivered today and its been nothing but a distraction so far. My fellow agents stop by my office to share tips and which apps I should get. I agree I can already see how well this is going to integrate into my business plan.

Eileen Andriod is not very far behind and gaining quickly in popularity. I think from a real estate perspective our industry apps have been released for Apple first, and Im trying to be different and cutting edge with the iPad.

Kathy the new Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet looks very promising. There is a USB adapter, but if you are looking to transfer files you can use DropBox or the recently announced Cloud service. For Flash you can use Skyfire as your browser instead of Safari, my coworker showed me that today.

I believe that the industry applications are geared towards the I-Pad, at least for now.
