The meeting and interview with Jeanne Bowie was long overdue for me.  She has been helping several of my clients for some time now.   Jeanne specializes in real estate law and works in Tacoma with McFerran, Burns & Stovall.  Even before I met Jeanne, I knew she was a treasure.  She has saved and help orchestrate several challenging transactions involving mutual clients and I definitely am glad I have her here in the area as a resource.  The best part of it is she does it all with a smile. She finds working with Real Estate in the greater Tacoma area to be exciting.  She has enjoyed watching and being involved with the development of a downtown as well as the area's other growth and steady improvement.

Who needs Jeanne's professional help?  Anyone who is considering doing a short sale or a facing a foreclosure does.  You will also want to see a real estate attorney if you are dividing off a piece of property from another, setting up a road maintenance agreement or are married and buying a portion on your real estate with individual funds.  You also will want to use a real estate attorney if for some reason or another you are selling or buying property without the assistance of a real estate professional and in some cases even when you are working with one.  Jeanne and her team are also specialists in doing a tax deferred 1031 exchange.

McFerran, Burns and Stovall are a very adaptive law office and it is clear they are busier than ever at a time when many such offices are closing the doors.  Why? Jeanne explains, when less and less people had equity in the homes they were selling and so less and less people had money left over from a sale to do a tax deferred exchange with they took a look at where the market was going.  It was clearly going towards foreclosures and short sales.  So, the office decided to get educated.  They trained those who had been processing tax deferred exchange to process short sales instead.  The attorney's who mostly dealt with 1031 exchanges worked to become versed in law surrounding distressed properties and foreclosure.

Jeanne now spends several hours a day consulting with home owners who need to have good advice on where to turn and what their options are.  Her goal is not just to give options, but to help each client leave with a game plan as well.  It's clear that Jeanne is very committed to the clients and making sure to give them sound education and advice.  Even better McFerran, Burns and Stovall has rates that make it so you can do so affordably....a person in this situation can get good legal advice for $150.  Also if a short sale is the best option they will negotiate it for the client for as little as $1500. (If you need this help you can find out exactly what it will be for you at your consult)  This is unheard of in the industry and has made it possible for several of my clients to get the right professional help.  When a new law goes into effect regarding a requirement for banks to offer in person mediation prior to foreclosure Jeanne will offer these services as well.

Since so many of my clients fix and resell homes I was also excited to find out that they are also one of Jeanne's favorite types clients as well. She also works with investors who hold their properties for rentals.   It was fun to see the energy with which she spoke about enjoying helping them be in a place to improve homes and neighborhoods while improving their own bottom lines as well.  In addition to this any of us who do not yet have a will and our estate planning done or updated would benefit from working with Jeanne too.  In fact Jeanne offers a package of services that include a consultation, a will, a durable power of atty, and a health care directive.  With these services as well as a back ground in Title and Escrow and the ability to handle closing through the firm, Jeanne is about as well rounded as any specialist could be.

All this talking about working made me wonder if Jeanne has time for anything else, and the answer is, she does.  Jeanne lives in Federal way and the reverse commute she has been making to Tacoma for the last 6 years affords her far more time than the average commuter.  She capitalizes on this time by spending time with her husband and gardening.  She enjoys being outside and growing her own food.  Not everything she grows is for eating though. Jeanne also enjoys the flowers in their garden as well.  She is passionate about preserving heirloom seeds and excited to try new things she has never grown before.  This year so far her cold crops are doing well, the lettuce, spinach and chard.

Like many gardeners in the area, she had a sparse harvest last year, but hoping for a bumper crop this year that includes shelling beans (good for stews and soups) and Peppers.  I tell her I have my cucumbers and zucchini in already and she says she is waiting....and in 3 days it is clear that it's not just her legal advice that is sound but also her gardening advice....mine die in the cold of the night.

Jeanne does not just grow her own veggies and flowers however, she also raises her own eggs.   This started on somewhat of a whim, but clearly has become a permanent activity for the family.

When Jeanne is not practicing real estate law or gardening you may find her dining at her favorite local restaurant, the Lobster Shop.  Favorite dish?  "Everything is good, and best of all is the view!"

So next time you are in need of good legal advice regarding Real Estate or estate planning contact Jeanne, you might even get a gardening tip at the same time!  Jeanne is definitely one of Tacoma's Treasures.
