I Saw Rock City....I Think?

Back when I was young, my parents and grandparents would take my brother and I on all sorts of road trips to see strange things.

To keep from going crazy(or killing each other) in the back seat, we would make up funny rhymes about the Burma Shave road signs.

We traveled all over the South. Back then, there were road signs for Pall Mall cigarettes, Texaco gas stations and See Rock City painted on barns.

Later in the 70's Dad even owned a Texaco station! The man who wears the star...haha.

Last weekend as I was tooling around in Pigeon Forge TN with BFF Activerainer, Connie King, I couldn't resist taking a picture of this barn with the See Rock City in the side.

I almost got shot taking another picture down that lane, but that will be another story for later. Whew!

Out of 900 barns in 19 states that were painted by Clark Byers from 1932 to spread the word about the exciting location in Chattanooga... only about 100 are still standing. More on the barn history

We might have to plan a trip to see Lovers leap and all the hoopla over seeing 7 states all at one place. Now that's BIG stuff! Since I don't remember being there as a kid... I might need to see it again.

Now, I'm wanting one of those See Rock City bird houses for the yard.

Life sure was simple back then in my grandfathers car watching history zip by the window.

Lizette - I lived in Nashville for 8 yrs and every trip to Chattanooga or Atlanta had COUNTLESS campy signs for Rock City, See 7 States from 1 Point, etc - hilarious!  Your blog just reminded me....

That was a fun and interesting story. When I was a kid we had some roadside signs but not much of merit today.

Sure enjoyed the weekend but the "welcome" committee on the road with the barn left something to be desired!   So much for Southern hospitality.

Lizette what a cut story, it reminded me of time spent in the car watching things go by.  Now I try taking photos from a moving car.
