Helping Kids Play Soccer, Recycling Cans and Bottles . . . Pay it Forward

Here in Prospect CT, the Woodland high School Boys and girls soccer teams held a drive to collect cans and bottles.

The proceeds would go toward their costs of travel, etc for their games and practices.

Several groups collect recyclables a few times a year, and we always save our cans and bottles just for these drives.

With 6 months worth of empties in various oversized plastic bags, I loaded up the car and went to the parking lot of St Anthony's church in the center of town. There the volunteers gladly took all the bags and carried them to the sorting area and then into the truck .

I may have left them $10 to $15 worth of empties, but that was so much more rewarding than taking them to the store myself.

I recall too many days as a kid standing in my uniforms outside a store looking for donations of having those candy bars to sell. I know they liked this a lot more.

Ed: What does six months worth of recycling look like? I guess we use too many cans and bottles. I could never store them all. Congrats to the kids for a green fundraising project. It's a win-win. I hope they did well.

HI Ed - This is a great way to pay it forward, especially as you know exactly how much it means to them to have someone drop off a large amount of recycling for thier cause. Well done!

What a great fundraiser!  I, too, remember the car washes and candy sales... you're right, this is a much better way for a group like this to do fundraising.  Makes us all feel good about paying it forward - them and us!

Ed, one of the Boy Scout Troops in Cromwell does this every month to raise money for their Troop.  I like these types of fundraisers, because they not only raise money, but they also teach kids valuable lessons.

Michael, yes it does, thanks for stopping

Anne, here in CT they take $ .05 deposit on beverage cans and bottles, including water bottles, and we don't drink a lot of soft drinks or beer, so it's not as bad as one might imagine. In this case it was 4 large plastic trash bags.

Barbara, I don't know how much fun it was for the volunteers. The kids were on the adjacent field playing soccer while their parents worked.

Judy, they must have had a good day as they filled the box truck they had and still had bags on the ground.

Gita, I don't know who was better served, the kids or me as I didn't have to stand in front of a machine putting in cans and bottles.

Margaret, yes it does, thanks for stopping

Barbara, there are a couple of schools in our areas that make the kids pay to be in after school activities. As if the taxes aren't enough.

Hey A & P, they have these things running several times a summer for different groups. Usually fo us, the first one we get to gets the big load. The rest maybe get cheated.

Judi, thanks for stopping, it does drive a point home to the kids as well.

Margie, the smaller kids still spend time out front of the markets and gas stations as it doesn't raise it all.

Juli, some of those bars were terrible, with such odd names, Batter-up Bar

George, that's a lot of effort to run one every month. I guess the ideal place to set up would be next door to the recycling machines.
