More than fifty quilts are on display through November 6, 2011, at the Mingei International Museum, which is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The quilts are in the Bold Expressions exhibit featuring African-American quilts from the American South. The quilts were crafted from common materials such as flour sacks, blue jeans, work clothes, and just about any fabric remnant that could be found. They date from the 1970s back to 1910 and are from the collection of Corrine Riley, an Art Institute of Chicago graduate who has been collecting quilts for 35 years. These are not your everyday quilts, and the asymmetry and bold colors might be shocking to those of us used to the $99 mass-produced quilt from Sears that last for about five years, less if you have a cat. The Mingei International Museum is located at 1439 El Prado in Balboa Park: ♪♫♫♫♪ Recent blog posts:

35 years is a long time to collect quilts. Sound like an interesting event.
Jim, I have completed a few quilts, and was a member of a "bee" for a couple of years..... this is a real American art form, and there are many, many, people that will find this exhibition fascinating and amazing.... my 11 year old male cat Dedo... has disappeared.......gone 9 days now..... I am hopeful he will reappear..
