Through January 1, 2012, the Maritime Museum of San Diego is exhibiting an exclusive, world-class exhibit of 18th and 19th century paintings, sculptures, woodblock prints, engravings, and other artifacts from the travels of Captain James Cook (1728-1779), Herman Melville (1819-1891), and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Captain Cook was a British explorer and the first European to visit the Hawaiian Islands. Melville is an American author, most notably of Moby Dick. Gauguin was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist. The Maritime Musem also has a large collection of historic ships, including the Star of India, the world's oldest ship capable of sailing on its own, a Russian submarine, and the historic replica ship that starred in the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
