Stamp Out Sexist Stereotypes~Real Estate Professionals Can Make A Difference

By

Grrrrr. Nothing makes us madder than manufacturers hyping their wares by trying to perpetuate tired and untrue sexist stereotypes. Over Mother's Day the following Proctor & Gamble coupon and advertisement appeared in our newspaper.

Proctor and Gamble Ad | www.MoonDancerRealty.com

Leslie Rojohn | www.MoonDancerRealty.com

Leslie immediately got on the internet to see what the most effective way to make a difference might be.

We are all in the business of helping people house themselves and their families.  No one knows better than REALTORS and lenders how the housekeeping and breadwinning "roles" of homeowners have changed in the last 30 years.

Will you help Leslie out? She needs a minimum of 50 people signing a petition to send a message to Proctor & Gamble encouraging them to update their marketing to better reflect current households.  It's very simple and will take less than a minute of your time.  Here's a copy of the email Leslie sent to friends and associates seeking their help.  The link follows her message.  Thank you so much for helping encourage Proctor & Gamble with some insistent consciousness raising.

Hi,  Proctor & Gamble recently put on a  Mr. Clean coupon in the mother's day supplement a picture of a woman and child with the caption "Now Get Back to the Job That Really Matters", and all their ads portray women as the only ones who clean, serve, wait on men and boys, etc.  Underlining message- You women need to get pregnant and back in the kitchen where you belong.

So Leslie created a petition to Robert Mc Donald, CEO, which says:

"Motherhood is an important job, but no more so than any other job that women do. Quit implying that women need to get "Back To The Job That Really Matters" as you did on your Mr. Clean coupon, and that unlike fatherhood, motherhood is all about cooking, cleaning and serving men and boys."

Will you sign this petition? Click here and follow the link:

Thanks for your support!

Hello J. Philip, yes that is the message - especially when put into context with the other cleaning ads on television. When was the last time you saw a man with a vacuum cleaner, dish liquid, laundry soap, swiffer floor products, air sanitizers, need I go on? Please sign the petition and then even if you are like me and mute the commercials...watch them for sexist content.  Thanks for commenting.

I do not take offense to this ad at all.  It was Mother's Day.  The ad was for Mother's on Mothers day. What else was it going to be about besides woman?  I think that sensitive woman are reading into it more than it is, making it mean beyond what it meant.  I am a mom and a full time Real Estate Broker (who brings the kiddo with me while I work. No daycare for me).  So I'm not "just" a stay at home mom (though I think that is a commendable decision for woman).  But sometimes I think woman get uneccesarily offended by things that mean no harm.  I think Tammy is right. The cleaning part should be easy, thus Mr. Clean can make it easy so you can get back to whatever else is more important (and being a mom IS important isn't it?) For goodness sakes, it was a Mother's Day ad, not a sexist ad.

Mona: I agree it was insensitive and I signed. 82% of American mothers work outside the home. Surely they are not the only person cooking, cleaning etc. And if they are, shame on us. Can't believe there aren't any women execs at P&G who thought this was a bad idea.  Even if they do something similar for Father's Day, that about 5 weeks away from the original ad.

I'm really surprised at the responses, honestly.  How is this ad saying that woman only stay at home and clean the house?  All houses need to be cleaned, I just don't see how this is saying that only woman do it.  Or that this woman in the ad doesn't also work outside of the home.  Or that her husband never helps her clean.  I'm not trying to be contradictory to you Mona, I just really, truly don't understand being offended by this.

I agree with Tammy and others that the ad was trying to make cleaning easy so Mom can get back to being a Mom, but I do see the sexist angle too...the Mom is (basically) showing her daughter (not her son) how to clean which reinforces outdated stereotypes.  I signed the petition thusly: "As a woman, as a feminist, and most importantly as a mother of a daughter who wears pants, I sign this petition asking Proctor & Gamble to create advertising that values mothers as women before housekeepers."

Mona, done!!!  Although to some degree I agree with Tammy that it was saying "get the job done quickly and get back to the important things in life".  However also agree with others who say why wasn't it a son?  Why wasn't dad cleaning and getting back to the important stuff?   Larry, Larry, Larry - that so much sounds like a man's comment :-))

Hello Casey, thank you for your thoughts on this matter. Personally, I am incredibly grateful for the "sensitive" women's reaction to this type of stereotypical ad. After all, if the sensitive women who came before me and the sensitive women who stood with me hadn't taken offense for being commonly portrayed as housekeepers, bimbos or sex objects in mass marketing, unable to vote, unable to work at competitive wages, unable to bring the kids to work, able to keep their job after maternity leave, able to make reproductive choices, able to run for public office...get the picture? My concern is for desensitized women taking for granted that the rights that were so dearly fought for...will always be here. They won't be unless someone stays ever vigilant and polices ads like P&G and works to keep the consciousness raised that society loses when all members aren't valued equally.

Anne, thanks for chiming in.  How about an ad that shows men and women SHARING in this clean up project so that the WHOLE family can move onto more pleasant pursuits.

Andrea, takes us back for sure and after we worked so hard to elevate the image.

Hi Barbara, I will hop over to your blog and check it out.  Thanks for the solidarity grrrr.

Hello Julie! Thanks for your comment and more importantly, thanks for being my very first outside contributor.

Hey Cyndi, how was the vacation? Did you rush back and get the house clean? ;-}

Thanks everyone and even to those who disagreed. This is a great discussion topic and hopefully we've made a few people more aware and "sensitive" to the issue.

Mona and Leslie - all I can say is WTF? (In Canada this stands for "What The FlyingFlingFlang") Who would even think that this is an appropriate ad? Now I'm going to have to abandon all my P&G stuff...and you know how far-reaching that conglomerate goes! :-)  I tried to sign the petition, but I didn't have a zip code (sorry, I don't have an American address) - but I'm right there with ya in spirit!

I understand where some of the other commenters are coming from, but I have to say this ad annoyed me.  After all, if it were featured on mother's day, why not use a picture of a guy in the ad?

Hi Karen, thanks for your sentiments.  Go ahead and sign the petition, feel free to use our zip code 28725 and we will forward any apologies from P&G to you. We need a certain number of signatures for the message to go to Proctor and Gamble. We appreciate your enthusiasm.

Hello Christie, that is a BRILLIANT idea.  The caption could have read something like "Mr Clean helps you both get the houseclean so you can both get back to what really matters, doing things as a family for Mother's Day.  Thanks so much for writing, I hope you had a chance to sign the petition.

The most visible vacuum spokemen now are Oreck and Dyson, and they are male.

Billy Mays was and the sham wow guy are to me the most visible cleaner/detergent spokespeople.

That said, I don't see anything wrong with telling the companies that you want equality, although, as they say, women who seek equality with men lack ambition. ;-)

Hello Phillip, did you have that bumper sicker too ;-}  ?  This could possibly be a terrific AR challenge. Some sort of contest of women featured cleaning ads vs men featured cleaning ads, not to intimidate you...but you would sooooo lose! How about the Bounty Paper towel ad where the husband and son are clowning around and spill some sort of stuff all over the counter and then the wife beams a "boys will be boys" smile at them as she does that bizarre Stepford Wife sashay over to the towels to clean it up.  I'm telling you...I got a million of them!  But that's okay because SNAP you're going to notice now.  I really appreciate your good humored comment and the devilish smile I know you were wearing when you made it.  Have a prosperous day.
