Green "Prescription" for Stress

A Toronto Doctor, Dr. Conrad Sichler, has been giving people a "green" Rx for Stress and/or depression. He has written a prescription, using his prescription pad, encouraging more than a dozen people so far to walk the nature trails near their homes.

This should come as "news" to a very few people... I am sure if we have had a chance to walk in solitude in the woods or forests in our pasts, and we think back, we all know this, that the quiet time, absorbing the beauty in the world around us, relieves our stress.

In the U.S. parks and conservation areas have combined with health centres encouraging people, both adults and children to get a "dose of the outdoors" by hiking trails, paddling rivers and inhaling the fresh outdoors.

Proponents of getting outdoors have suggested that we realize benefits even if we cannot get out to a forest, a wooded hiking trail or a conservation area by spending time outdoors in a playground or neighbourhood park.

Such an activity can provide a boost to the metabolism, soothe the soul, and give one time to unwind. The added physical activity is a bonus =)

It seems to make sense to me that exposure to the outdoors and participating in activities such as these would tend to benifit both mental and physical health.

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, ON. has organized family walks on Sunday afternoons to help with the initiative to bring families back outdoors.

Chris...I couldn't agree more. This balance is missing and a lot of city kids would change for the better if they were allowed monthly trips into the wilderness via hiking and camping excursions. Works every-time too..I suggested this. thank you Chris...good stuff pal

Chris, I'm certain that living in a semi-rural area has been a huge benefit to my health in the long run. I can take a five minute drive and be in the middle of nowhere. I remember when I worked for Suncor in Toronto I used to experience the most God-awful headaches almost daily. No wonder - an hours drive to and from work, a stressful job, absolutely no time for myself, and rarely if ever experiencing silence or nature. By the time I was 30, I knew this had to change.

Chris, The surrounding beauty is enough to calm one's nerves and the smells would be soothing as well. This is a great alternative to prescription drugs!

Richie, I gres up in the city also, but had plenty of exposure to nature and hiking thanks to my parents. Perhaps we should be doing likewise.

Malcolm, I have appreciated the calming affect nature could have on me since I was a teenager, but often forget about this when life gets hectic, just when we need it most.

Wanda, you live in Nature's heartland... if I remember the sign as you enter Kanab from the north, "The Greatest Earth on Show" =)

Chris,

That seems like good advice, and I'd rather take a walk than take pills.

Hi Chris~ Even living in the heart of a big city, I find ways to get my Zen time!

I walk daily along the waterfront to a park where it becomes quiet and green. I come back into the hustle and bustle of the city with only a few steps and still feel revived and at peace, all because I took a walk in the park!

We all have the option to stop and smell the roses...Nature is wonderful!
