Mission Hills Nursery was founded in 1910 by Kate Sessions (1857-1940), a horticulturist and landscape architect who introduced many plants to San Diego, particularly to Balboa Park, which could be why she is affectionately known as the "Mother of Balboa Park."

I discovered Mission Hills Nursery not long after I came to
San Diego in 1988. I was looking for a plant for my patio and a
co-worker recommended Mission Hills Nursery. I bought a fuchsia like that in the top picture because it was so beautiful. Not being a gardener, my fuchsia didn't last very long.

Not to worry because I make several trips each year to Mission Hills Nursery to buy fuchsias, cyclamens, ferns, succulents, petunias, and various hanging baskets. Not being a gardener (did I already say that?), my plants don't last very long. Nowhere on my hands is there a green thumb, but I do my best, and I'm sure Mission Hills Nursery appreciates my regular returns for more plants!

Green thumb or brown thumb, Mission Hills Nursery can help you with virtually any plant — bedding plants, hanging plants, vegetables, fruit trees, garden designs, orchids, cactus, fuchsias (you knew I was going to throw that in there!), succulents, native California plants....

The very knowledgeable and very helpful staff go out of their way to make sure you're satisfied with Mission Hills Nursery. They know everything there is to know about their plants.

Anything you want, you can find it at Mission Hills Nursery: pest control, organic gardening, gardening tools and gloves, t-shirts, water keepers, pots, wind chimes, garden ornaments, and more. They also have a huge collection of seed packets for those who like to watch the little plants poke their heads out of ground and reach for the sky!

They even have their own kitty cat. I believe her name is Reina:
