When we bought our home in Weston Florida it came with a gas heated pool. The weather here will soon be changing...it will eventually get cold. But how can anyone continue to be able to swim in their pool during the winter months without it costing them an arm and a leg?. Easy.... through solar heating installed into your pools system.
With high energy costs and the strain it was putting on our pockets.....we decided to go with solar power as an alternative to gas heating. It is a great way to save yourself thousands of dollars in the long run and is environmentally safe. As a matter of fact...many of our eco-fans out there support this and after having it installed and utilizing it for two seasons we definitely have seen those benefits. The green laws were really a great idea and in the long run it will help others just as it has for my family.

In order to get the most out of it... you need solar panels by Aqua-therm strategically installed on you roof. Depending on which way your home faces and how much area you have for coverage will determine the amount of panels you will need.
Because of how this house is positioned.. we needed a few additional panels to get full heating exposure. I also needed to submit an architectural plan for our association which was approved very quick.
As you can see...you will need to add PVC piping to your filtering pump system in order for the flow of water to go up though the pipes and into storage of your panels where they are heated by the sun and as the temperature rises the water will flow back through the system and into your pool water.
Piping is re-cut and re-routed through the system and the black box with the dial on it turns clock wise as the temperature changes to open the flow of water and it begins to circulate through the system and back into the pool for continuous heat to the water.

The Helio-Matic controls your thermostat temperature. The dial has either an automatic or manual control that caters to the users convenience. You can make changes to the temperature that is comfortable for you. It goes as high as 100 degrees but in the hot summer months it can heat up the water much higher... so you might have to make adjustments along the way. Once installed...it does not cost you a dime to run and homeowners that are looking to extend their swimming season for an additional 3 months of pool time... will save money and keep the environment safe instead of having those high electric or gas heating bills and added polution into the atmosphere..... they will also have piece of mind...I beleive that this is really the way to go.
Broward Solar -located at 1720 Seaway Drive Ft. Pierce FL 34949 with 2 other locations-Ft. Lauderdale and Boca Raton
You will also save up to 10 hours of heating time by having this constantly running....just set it and forget it.

The outside temperature might be 50 tomorrow... but my pool will be 90.
Happy swimming!

Thanks Barbara,
Sally,
I just want people to know that it can save you money in the long run...so far it saved us about $2000 instead of gas. Also good for the environment.
Neal - good write-up on an environmentally sensitive issue. This is terrific information for everyone who has a pool or is thinking about it. Your personal perspective adds credibility as well as providing some insights on issues homeowners be aware of.
Jeff
Jeff,
Thanks...I added the pool so they can see the extra enjoyment we get from the extended time.
Hi Neal - good consumer post!!
Too cold to swim in the 'winter months' in Weston???? Just where is Weston Florida anyway? Too cold???
Ann
Ann,
If it rains or it is not sunny...when it gets colder around the 60's...the water will lose about 1 degree an hour...if you want as a back up then you need to put the gas on...but if the suns rays are only in the 60's then the water feels quite chilly...we have gone in around the md- 60's but it will always be around 10 degrees warmer than without it.
Thanks
Thesa,
I'm not sure it would work in that type of cold...the idea is more for storage ...this company also sells the hot water heater in solar...you have to put another type of panel up and is only hooked to the heater. Definitely makes working more of a pleasure!
