Unless your child is bouncing off the walls and may have adhd most schools do not have testing for ADD. I was very surprised to find out that schools can not test for ADD. These children can slip through the cracks as my middle daughter did. She tested out with a verbal vocabulary at College level in 6th grade but her written skills were 4th grade level. Trust me, If you find yourself losing it or pulling your hair out anytime over homework time, chore time or get out of bed to go to school time on a daily basis,Or your child has an extremely bad temper- 9 times out of 10 it is ADD.
Most schools will not offer the services of a school sychologits to test your child for add or adhd. They leave it to the parents to find out on their own. Which I did, my palos verdes school teachers were interested to learn about ADD/ADHD after I educated them about the ADD Treatment Centers. @ of my son's teachers from SIlver Spur even went so far as to call Dr. Shummer and meet with him so they could better help their students. I did have one negative experience of a 4th grade teacher who was ignorant of my son's add and went so far as to call him Lazy, a talker and not motivated. Well I tried to educate her the enxt year when I told her my son after having treatment his grades went from the 60%-80% to 80% and up. I think she remained stuck in her judgement call about my son.
I hope this will help some other parents who hear things said like this about their child. After treatment and much bad behavior modificating, I am pleased to reoprt my son's grades are excellent and he now gets up in the morning and worries about being late to school.
I had an evaluation at my request for my son in the 4th grade after I found several doctor's that diagnosed him with ADD. The teacher's comments were he is easily distracted, he talks and is everyone's business and she also called him lazy. Even in this day and age, some teachers still don't understand ADD even though they claim to be informed of it. I am repeating this so you will be aware of these statements if said about your child.
Well, I came to find out that even though my son displayed the classic symptoms for ADD he was never diagnosed by his school because I was shocked when told by the School Team evaluation that the school distirct does not have testing for it. Once I came back with my diagnosis the school IEP Team bent over backwards to help me. I was quite pleased at their dedication.
I was very upset at this teacher calling my child lazy. The damage these uneducated educators do to children's self esteem with this disease is very unnecessary. I was happy that the Principal and his 5th grade teachers even went as far as to call Dr. Schummer and arrange a visit with him. I was very impressed with the dedication of his 5th grade teachers to become more involved with the ADD Treatment Center.
With my fantastic mother and family support, I had him tested at the Drake Institute and later was especially blessed to have been referred to Dr. Schummer and the ADD Treatment Center. Dr. Schummer is one step further as I have been told by several of his clients to have a gift for diagnosing and treating cases that the other Institutes do not have a great success rate with. Dr. Schummer send his Q's which is what they call the brain mapping tests out to 3 different companies to read them. Which He claims makes all the difference in the success of his treatments.
My child was no longer the last one to class, his grades went from a 60,80,60 to 80-90'S in the fifth grade. He forgets his homework or doesn't know when at test is coming. He remembers to bring his homework back to school and even reminds me of important dates. His self esteem is back and he is no longer embarrassed of his test scores in front of his peers. Yes, ADD children have learned to smile and charm you to get around what they did not understand so that battle of wills is still on but considerably less. All this great results from Neurofeedback and in my case no medicine at all. I n worse case the meds can be lowered to a minimum.
These children also have the ability to focus on tasks that they are interested in for a long period of time. h for my child is baseball and yes, he hits home-runs out of the park. For one of my clients with ADD it was computers so He made $200.00 for his ability to focus on details for a long time.
So just remember the key words: IF you hear that your child is not focused, unorganized, lazy, a incessant talker, or as my middle daughter was told by her High School Teacher, that she has the attention span of a nat.
It is probably ADD. These children are not hyper like their adhd counterparts, ADD Kids are just friendly and outgoing usually very charming. THey learned if they dazzle you with a smile you won't notice what they don't understand.
